and their descendents

contributed by Pat Nelson

Martha Wilson was probably born to Henry and Dicy Wilson on 25 December 1848; however, according to her death certificate, she was born in Nashville in 1843.  Martha married Henry Hunter on 18 November 1869 in Greene County, Tennessee; their marriage license stated that they were “freedmen.”  According to information pieced together from various censuses, Henry Hunter was a mulatto, born in Nashville, Tennessee in February, about 1845.  His father was born in Ohio; his mother was born in Tennessee.

As a young man, Henry Hunter earned his living as a farm laborer.  In 1870, his personal estate had a value of about $750.  In 1900, Henry gave his occupation as being a steward to a private family.  In 1910, Martha worked as a cook.  Henry worked as a gardener for a private family on both the 1910 and 1920 censuses.

Martha and Henry Hunter moved several times:

1870    Greeneville Post Office, Civil District #24, Greene County, Tennessee

1880    District 3, Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas

1900    72 B Avenue, Coronado City, San Diego County, California

1910    B Avenue, Coronado City, San Diego County, California

1920    2067 Julian Avenue, San Diego City, San Diego County, California

On the 1880 census, Martha and Henry Hunter had a son named Charley (Charles A.) Hunter, who was born in February of 1873 or 1874 in Tennessee; however, Charles’death certificate gave the date as 3 February 1872. On the 1900 census, Martha and Henry stated that they had only one child, and that child was still living.

Charley Hunter married Elizabeth A. / Libbie Lowe on 17 September 1896.  Libbie was born in Detroit, Michigan, in March of 1873 or 1874.

Henry Hunter died 1 November 1920; he was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery on 4 November 1920.

On the 1930 census, Martha Hunter, widowed, was living with her son Charles A. Hunter and his wife Elizabeth at 839 E. 38th Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.

Martha Hunter died at home on 5 May 1935, and was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, San Diego, California, on 8 May 1935.  Her address at the time of her death was 771 East 38th Street in Los Angeles, California.  The informant was Robert H. McElroy, who resided at the same address.  The death certificate said Martha Wilson Hunter had resided in California since 1895.  However, her son Charles Hunter’s death certificate said the family had lived in California since 1885.

Charles A. Hunter died 25 July 1937.  He was buried 28 July 1937 in Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles.
