Sarah E. / Sally / Sallie Wilson

and her descendents

contributed by Pat Nelson

Sarah /Sally Wilson was born about 1868 in Tennessee to Henry and Dicy Wilson.  She was living with her parents in Greene County, Tennessee, in 1870 and with them in Collin County, Texas, in 1880.  Nothing has been found about her marriage; however, the death certificate for her son Lee Wilson names Harrison Wilson as his father.

……………………………………………………………………………………………

In 1900, Sallie Wilson was living at 115 Union Alley, Dallas City, Precinct #1, Dallas County, Texas.  She was working as a wash woman and was the head of the household.  She stated that she had three children, and that all three were still alive.  (They were also all still alive in 1910.)  The 1900 census said that Texas was the birthplace of the father of all of the children; however, the 1910 census said the birthplace of the father was South Carolina.  Sallie’s children were:

Lee Wilson                      born 27 October 1887 in Plano, Collin County, Texas

Mary Wilson                   born in March of 1889 in Texas

Minnie / Mamie Wilson    born in June of 1891 in Texas

……………………………………………………………………………………………

On the 1900 census, there was a 19 year old in-law named Corrine who was working as a cook living with Sallie.  Corrine had a one year old son who was born in June of 1899.

On the 1910 census, Sally Wilson was again listed as the head of her household.  She was living at 1450 East 17th Street, Los Angeles, California, was single, and was working as a laundress.  In 1920, Sallie was listed as a widow, working as a laundress, and was still living at the same address.  Sally Wilson, laundress, also appeared in the 1920 Los Angeles City Directory, living at 1411 ½  East 17th Street.  Sally’s sister Jessie Neal and her children were living a few doors down.

Sallie E. Wilson died 3 February 1924 at her residence, 1602 Naomi Street in Los Angeles.  The informant was Mary E.   Sallie Wilson was buried 6 February 1924 at Evergreen Cemetery.

The Children and Grandchild of Sally Wilson

On the 1910 census, Sally had a daughter named Minnie Irvine living with her.  The census said Minnie was born in Texas about 1892; this was probably the same child as Mamie in the 1900 census.  Minnie hired out as a servant.  Mildred E. Irvine (Minnie’s daughter), born 21 February 1908 in Los Angeles, was also living with the family.

On the 1920 census, Mildred Irvin was still living with Sally, but Minnie / Mamie Irvin was not; no further information has been found on Minnie / Mamie Wilson Irvin.

A death record was located for Mildred E. Calhoun, born 21 February 1908, in California; her father’s surname was Irvin, and her mother’s maiden name was Minnie Wilson. Mildred was a widow, living at 2428 S. Cochran Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90016.  She had completed 12 years of education and owned her own home. Mildred died 14 September 1990 in Los Angeles and was buried 21 September 1990 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 1712 S. Glendale Avenue, Glendale, California.  The informant on her death certificate was her cousin, William Maxwell.

Sallie’s son Lee Wilson was also living with her in 1910.  He was working as a driver for a clothing store.

In 1917, according to his World War I Draft Registration card, Lee Wilson was living at 1430 East 16th Street, Los Angeles, California.  He was employed by Miss M. B. Miller, of Los Angeles; he worked the switchboard at a private exchange.  He was single and supporting his mother.

On the 1920 census, Lee Wilson was living at 1411 East 17th Street and working as a porter in a clothing store.  Lee Wilson appeared in two places on the 1930 census.  Lee was listed as living at 1418 E. 17th Street in Los Angeles, and also was listed as living with Jessie Neal, his aunt, at 1438 E. 16th Street, Los Angeles.  He was working as an elevator operator in a hotel.

On his death certificate, the birthdate for Lee Wilson was given as 22 October 1887.  The informant was Clarence Neal of 1515 E. 16th Street in Los Angeles, the same address given as the residence of Lee Wilaon.  Lee Wilson was the victim of a homicide that took place in front of 424 So. Los Angeles Street in Los Angeles on 23 August 1937.  An autopsy and inquest was carried out; the coroner’s report said Lee was knocked to the sidewalk and died of a concussion of the brain and subdural hemorrhage.  Lee Wilson was buried 27 August 1937 at Evergreen Cemetery.
