Thomas Lord Wilson and Anna Rebecca Chapman

and their descendents

contributed by Pat Nelson

According to his death certificate, Thomas Lord Wilson was born 4 October 1858 to Henry Wilson and Dicy Williams.  Thomas married Anna/Annie Rebecca Chapman on 17 September 1878 in Greene County, Tennessee.  According to an early census, Annie was born in June of 1861 in Alabama, but both of her parents were born in North Carolina.  However, the delayed birth certificate of one of her children said she had been born in Nasheville, North Carolina.  (There is a Nashville just east of Raleigh.)  Both Thomas and Annie were classified on the 1880 census as mulatto.

Thomas Wilson worked at a variety of jobs during his lifetime.  In 1880, he was listed as “farming this season.”  In 1900, he worked as a day laborer; in 1910, he was a teamster for a coal bunker; and in 1920, he was a watchman for a railroad company.  He also relocated several times:

1870    Greeneville Post Office, CD#24, Greene County, Tennessee (with his parents)

1880    District 3, Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas

1900    725 Franklin Avenue, San Diego City, San Diego County, California

1910    761 Franklin Avenue, San Diego City, San Diego County, California

1920    2265 Kearney Avenue, San Diego City, San Diego County, California

Thomas Lord Wilson died 16 December 1922 at 2265 San Diego, San Diego County, California, and was buried 23 December 1922 at Mt. Hope Cemetery.  In 1930, Anna R. Wilson, widowed, was found living with her son Dennis B. Wilson, who was also widowed, and Dennis’ son Thomas R. Wilson at 848 Olive Avenue, Coronado City, San Diego, California.  Anna was working as a dressmaker for a private family.  It has not been determined when Anna Rebecca Chapman Wilson died.

The Children and Grandchildren of Thomas L. and Anna Chapman Wilson

Thomas and Anna Wilson stated on the 1900 and 1910 census that they had three children and that all were still alive.  Those children were:

Dennis B. Wilson          born 28 June 1879 in Tennessee (from WWI Draft Registration)

Walter Leroy Wilson     born 14 November of 1881 one mile north of Plano, Texas

Bertha Alma Wilson      born 30 October 1883 in Texas

Dennis B. Wilson and Evelyn

Dennis B. Wilson, the eldest child of Thomas and Anna Chapman Wilson, married his wife Evelyn, who was born in Iowa, about 1908.  On the 1910 census, they were living in Coronado City, San Diego, California, and Dennis was working as a chauffeur for a private family.

On his 1918 World War I Draft Registration card, Dennis listed his address as 848 Olive Avenue, Coronado.  He gave his occupation as a driller’s helper, Union Iron Works, Alameda, California.

In 1920, Dennis was again working as a chauffeur for a private family.  He and Evelyn Wilson were living at 848 Palm Avenue, Coronado City, San Diego County, California.  Evelyn’s widowed mother, Parthenia Reynolds, was also living with the family.  Parthenia stated that she was born about 1855 in Ohio, and that her parents were also from Ohio.  The entire family was classified as mulatto.

In 1930, Dennis was living at 848 Olive, Coronado, San Diego County, California.  His mother Anna was living with him, as was his son Thomas.  His wife Evelyn must have died between the 1920 and 1930 censuses, because Dennis was listed as a widower.

Dennis B. Wilson died 22 July 1950.  His death certificate gave June 26, 1881, as his birthday, which is a slightly different date than Dennis gave on his WWI Draft Registration card.  He must have remarried after 1930; the informant on his death certificate was his wife Anita S. Wilson.  Dennis was still living at 848 Olive Avenue, Coronado, San Diego, California, and his occupation was given as private chauffeur.  Curiously, his race was listed as white.  Dennis was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Walter Leroy Wilson

In 1900, Walter L. Wilson, the second child of Thomas and Anna Chapman Wilson, was single, living with his parents and doing day labor.  In 1910, he was still single, but now was living in San Francisco City, San Francisco County, California, working as a chauffeur.  He has not been located on the 1920 census, but in 1952, a Walter Wilson was the informant on Bertha Wilson’s death certificate.

Bertha Alma Wilson Underwood

Bertha Alma Wilson, the youngest child of Thomas and Anna Chapman Wilson, was living with her parents and working as a hairdresser in a ladies’ beauty shop in 1910.

She has not been located on the 1920 census.  However, on her death certificate on 19 October 1952, she was listed as Bertha Alma Underwood, widowed.  Bertha was self-employed as a beautician and living at 3609 Budlong is Los Angeles, California.  She was buried on 23 October 1952 in Paradise Cemetery.
