BETHEL CEMETERY

HISTORY OF FRISCO, TEXAS

William Rogers donated the land for Bethel Cemetery in 1850. Frances Rogers was the first death recorded. This was February 8, 1863. John B. Rogers was the second and Sallie Venable the third. No dates were given for these two. Benjamin Naugle's death was the fourth recorded. This was August 31, 1871.

F. P. Shrader was elected permanent chairman and A. P. Rogers permanent secretary May 21, 1904. Both men served in this capacity for many years.

A large shed was built in the northeast corner of the grounds in May 1914. Each year on Decoration Day a nice program was presented in the shed. There was dinner on the grounds. Everyone spread their food on long wooden tables. Decoration of the graves followed. After the program the yearly business meeting was conducted.

An interesting item: Lumber for the shed paid to the Lyon Gray Lumber Company was $179.50. Mr. Copeland built the shed (with help from volunteers, I'm sure) for $15.00 and painted it for $2.00.

Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, Joy Gough

There was once a community here that had a school and Bethel Methodist Church, which is said to be the first Methodist Church in Collin County. That church is now Frisco Methodist Church. The sign that was once at the entrance to the cemetery said the cemetery started in 1850. The town of Frisco was not started until 1902 when the railroad came through the area.

The cemetery has a large number of graves with many large stones. It is fenced but there are few trees. William Rogers donated 5 acres of land to the church in 1850. That deed has not been found. However, the deed in Vol 3, p 500 mentions it. The cemetery is not mentioned in these deeds. The first recorded burial is in 1863.

There are several deeds for the cemetery itself. One is listed in Vol 185, p 290. The cemetery belongs to the Bethel Cemetery Association. The Sonntag Family Cemetery was moved here in 1974 from south of Frisco in the Lebanon area. The James Family Cemetery has also been moved here from the area of Frisco High School. In October 1995, Turrentine, Jackson, and Morrow funeral homes offered to buy the land from the Bethel Cemetery Association. They would repair and maintain the old part of the cemetery and expand into the new part. The Association accepted the offer. Turrentines will be building a funeral home near the property. It is said that the extension of Virginia Parkway from McKinney will pass by the cemetery.
