BUSH CEMETERY - McKINNEY

FM2478

Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, Joy Gough

COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS I lists 3 Bushes buried here and 5 stones that were unreadable. The following stones were here in 1991.

Hattie d. D. A. & M. J. Vaughn d. Nov. 14, 1878, age 1 yr., 2 mo.

Our mother Mary Taylor d. May 27, 1891, age 78 years

Rosa d of W. G. and N. J. Harris  b. July 20, 1885 d. August 11, 1885

and foot stones for F. B., R. B. B., M. J. E., W. F. F. and F. A. B.

F. A. B. would be Francis A. Bush and F. B. would be her son Frank Bush.

According to a newspaper article printed about 1911 in one of the McKinney papers, the first person buried here was Mr. John Haggard, Sr.,

who died in 1859. He was the father of C. S. Haggard. In 1861 Mrs. Dorinda Bush, wife of Oliver Bush and mother of Mrs. Jim Herndon and

Henry Bush, was buried here. Oliver Bush was the brother of W. M. Bush. In 1862 Mrs. W. F. Elkin and in 1872 Mr. W. F. Elkin were buried

here. They were the parents of Mr. Frank Elkin. The footstones above for M. J. E. and W. F. F. are probably theirs. Dorinda Bush is now buried

in the Rowlett Cemetery.

This cemetery is on land that once belonged to the Maj. William Martin Bush family. He was the major in charge of the Confederate soldiers

from this part of the county. W. M. Bush was married to Nancy Gholson Elkin. The Bushes settled here in about 1855. There are various

references to this cemetery as the Elkin Cemetery. I have been told that the Bush family moved most of their family to the Rowlett Cemetery

about ½ mile southwest.

In the Bush family book, they call the Rowlett Cemetery "the family cemetery." At least 3 of the Bushes buried there

have death dates before the Rowlett Cemetery was started in the first half of 1862, including the wife and daughter of W. M. Bush.
