FISHER ROBERTS CEMETERY - LUCAS
Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, by Joy Gough
There are 4 old stones here dating from the 1850s, 2 for the Fishers and 2 for
the Roberts. Their bases are broken but otherwise they are in good condition.
The writing is beginning to fade from exposure to the elements. At present the
stones are lying on the ground. One of the stones is broken from all of the
moving.
This is a 1/2 acre deeded cemetery with the deed listed in Vol J, p 112 and Vol L,
p 45. It is on the Whitsaul Fisher survey. Whitsaul Fisher was a Baptist
preacher. He and his wife, Amanda, were charter members of the Orchard Gap
Baptist Church, which was founded in December of 1853. It was just east of here.
The two Fishers buried here were the sons of James T. Fisher. Peter and Whitsaul
Fisher both had headrights in the area. A Fisher daughter married a Roberts. The
deed does not give precise directions as to the location of the cemetery. It
says it is in the fork of 2 branches.
This land was surveyed in 1978 for development. The owner tried to throw the
stones out. The stones were saved but the exact location of the cemetery is
unknown. An old-timer says there were about 10 graves here at one time. One
person says that there were iron head stones in the cemetery and one stone
dating into the 1700's (for a birth).
[This cemetery has since been lost. A house has been built on the possible
location of the cemetery.]
FISHER ROBERTS CEMETERY
Allen Leader, April 14, 1985, BETWEEN THE CREEKS, by Gwen Pettit
... Members of the Collin County Historical Society and a representative of a
local family have told us that an attempt has been made to obliterate another
family cemetery. The 133-year-old tombstones it had were of the earliest dated
(1852) in the county. When the original headright owner, Whitsaul Fisher, sold
the land....[missing]
...a Regular Predestinarian Baptist minister. His family was one of a colony
from central Missouri, that came to this state in the days of the Republic of
Texas.
We know there were later burials by a neighbor, Missourian family, who were
related by marriage and of the same faith. Because its size was large for only a
family cemetery, there possibly are unmarked graves. The nearby Fitzhugh family
cemetery did not become in general use until the 1870s when land was donated for
the Forest Grove Christian Church.
Three of the four tombstones that were still standing in this pioneer graveyard
in 1973 are recorded as having this epitaph: Go home dear friends and dry those
tears, I must lie here until Christ appears
[Buried in the cemetery are: David F. Fisher, b. Jan. 14, 1834, d. Apr. 3, 1854;
Peter D. Fisher, b. Oct 24, 1832, d. Nov. 23, 1856; Catharine Roberts, wife of
Jas. T., b. Aug. 29, 1811, d. Jan 21, 1858; and James T. Roberts, d. Jan. 26,
1805, d. Dec. 19, 1852. The 3 men were members of the IOOF.]
