INDIAN BURIAL GROUNDS
Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, by Joy
Gough
I know the location of 2 Indian Burial
Grounds in the county and have heard of others.
#1 This is near the Buckner Cemetery at Gray Branch Road. The Indians buried
here were given Christian burials. That means they were buried horizontally
instead of vertically. The Indians buried their dead vertically in a hunched
over position.
#2 This is near the League Cemetery on CR 424 at Sister Grove Creek.
#3 There are supposed to be Indian graves on the east side of the Herndon
Cemetery marked by bois d'arc posts. No evidence of the bois d'arc posts
has been found. The area has had a fire that could have burned the markers.
#4 Indian relics have been uncovered on the north side of the Thompson Cemetery
west of Nevada.
I have heard of an Indian burial ground in the Celina area and one in Graybill,
which was northwest of Westminster.
#5 Chief Spotted Tail is buried at the Buckner Cemetery. Chief Spotted Tail was
chief of the Kiowas that lived near McKinney. He helped bury the dead during a
smallpox epidemic. He contracted smallpox himself and died. He wanted to be
buried with the white man. The marker for his grave has disappeared.
#6 At one time there was supposed to be a tall marker in the old Walnut Grove
Cemetery for an Indian Chief and his horse.
There were a couple of Indian settlements in the county. One was near Princeton.
