Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, by Joy Gough

This is near the location of the original settlement in this area called Sugar Hill. Capt. John Yeary settled here in 1849 and opened a general store. One of his sons married a Jones. John Yeary was killed on Christmas Eve in 1854 for refusing to sell liquor on what he considered a religious holiday. He is buried in this cemetery. There are burials here for as early as 1850. The older stones in this cemetery obviously came from the rock quarry that was northwest of Farmersville. Some of them were horizontal and were supported by a 12-inch high wall. The walls have collapsed with age. The writing on the early stones is still legible. This is the only cemetery in Collin County where I have seen a man's wife referred to as his "consort." The word "consort" means that her husband was still alive at the time of her death.

This was once the main burial ground for Farmersville. It has been sadly neglected over the years. The county map has this labeled as the Tatum Cemetery. It is referred to as the Jones/Yeary Cemetery in COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS I. Mr. Tatum gave money to the Farmersville Baptist Church on the condition that they keep his plot cleaned up. When the church began to neglect his grave, citizens persuaded the church to use the rest of the fund for a fence for the cemetery. In 1991 the Sheriff's Department Prisoner Program put up the chain-link fence surrounding the cemetery.

The cemetery covers at least a couple of acres of land. It is hard to judge the size when you cannot see the boundaries. The deed is listed in Vol 17, p 241. In 1867 Dr. Markum give additional land to the cemetery in Vol 15, p 356. There are a couple of fenced family areas in the cemetery. The older graves are in the northwest corner. No one is caring for this cemetery at present.

In the fall of 1994 a Mormon Church group cleaned the cemetery.
