MONKEY RUN CEMETERY - LAVON
Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, by Joy
Gough
The exact location of this cemetery is
unknown. It is on the old Granville A. Jones property.
According to A HISTORY OF NEVADA, TEXAS, the cemetery contains about 50 graves.
It was on a cliff near the old turnpike that crossed the East Fork of the
Trinity River before Lake Lavon was built. The turnpike was a series of bridges
from Wylie eastward across the East Fork bottoms.
There was also a school here called the Cliff or Clift School. This stretch of
road was heavily traveled. Some travelers were pelted by stones thrown by
mischievous children, who ran off afterward. When people asked the location of
the community, people would say it was "down where the monkeys run."
This cemetery was not actually visited since several people said that it would
be hard to find. There are no longer roads in this area. This cemetery is on the
map in COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS I, but is unnamed. There is no
listing of the people buried here.
