MT. CARMEL CEMETERY - DESERT
CR584
Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, by Joy
Gough
The cemetery is north and west of the brick house.
At one time the owners of the house had a sign in their yard saying that
visitors could walk through their yard to the cemetery. They have since taken
down the sign and put up a fence and an electronic gate. Cemetery access is
through other people's property.
Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church and Mt. Carmel School were here at one time. The
deed for the church and school is listed in Vol 14, p 1. The church was south of
the cemetery facing south. The cemetery is very neglected with vegetation and
trees covering most of it. Most of the stones appear to be standing. There is no
sign of vandalism, probably because access is through someone's yard.
It was not possible to see the size of the cemetery because of the vegetation.
The deed for the school and church was for 2 acres. There are supposed to be 80
or more graves here. The cemetery is on the W. T. Jackson survey.
On Collin County deed records this is referred to as the Hampton Cemetery and is
shown for .65 acres. Some people call this the Confederate Cemetery.
