RACE/CATLETT CEMETERY - RICHARDSON

Brand Road

Cemeteries of Collin County, Texas, by Joy Gough

According to COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS I, "this cemetery was not known about until a few years back when a road was being cut through a plum thicket and the graves were discovered. The road was cut around the cemetery, and Mr. Race, who purchased the property, put a wrought-iron fence around it. He estimates around 25 unmarked graves within the fence. Mr. Race has set-aside one acre to be used as a graveyard and plans to bury his family there. Mr. Race's granddaughter, Jennifer Ann Race, was buried in 1967... no burials in the last sixty years."

This is a ¼ acre deeded cemetery listed on Vol 11414, p 621, dated October 30, 1970. It is surrounded by a chain-link fence. Most of the stones have been knocked over. It is very overgrown. There are no recent burials. I do not know where the Catlett name came from. There are no markers for Race or Catlett. Brand Road is about ¾ mile west of Murphy Road, FM 2551.

Dr. Race moved to New Mexico and moved his granddaughter's grave there. The family is being buried there. Breckinridge Park was once the Richardson City Dump. This may have been the original Murphy graveyard, which was near the dump.

In 1993 the citizens of Richardson voted to straighten the bend in Brand Road. When the bend is straightened out, this cemetery will be inside Breckinridge Park. I was told by a Richardson official that the city would then take care of the cemetery. I have made numerous trips to the cemetery to see if this was happening. So far no work has been done on the road or the cemetery.

This cemetery is listed in LIVING IN MURPHY, TEXAS, as a Murphy cemetery, even though it is actually in the city of Richardson. COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS I has a mistake on map #2 concerning this cemetery and the West Shady Grove Cemetery. The authors pasted a correction in their later books.
