LUCAS

JOTTINGS BY THE WAY

Daily Courier Gazette, February 8, 1938

Mrs. O. S. Scott

En route to Lucas, Tuesday afternoon, our first stop was at the one and only store at Forest Grove, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Martin. The latter was in charge and busy as a "cranberry merchant" waiting on customers We noticed a row of mail boxes in front of the store, to which the patrons come at noon after their mail. Hence the busy hour. Mr. and Mrs. Martin live nearby in their pretty country home.

We met Thos. J. Jones, who lives nearby. He and his young wife are constant readers of our big Weekly Democrat-Gazette.

Fred Petway is Superintendent of Bible School at the Christian Church and Rev. Floyd Leggett of T. C. U. preaches every third Sunday morning and night.

Lucas has one of the first Home Demonstration Club houses built in the county. It consists of two rooms and since the Home Demonstration members meet in the homes now, one of the teachers Miss Adams and her mother, live in the club house, which is located on the school campus.

Mrs. Martin says, "They have no service at the Forest Grove Church now, since good roads and automobiles are here. The members have gone to other churches." Occasionally funeral services are held in the old church as Fitzgerald cemetery, one of the oldest and best-kept burying grounds in the county is located adjoining.

We visited the general merchandise store operated by Roy Biggs, who is a son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Coffey. Mr. Biggs informed us that there is Sunday School every Sunday at the Baptist Church. C. M. Coffey is the Superintendent and Rev. J. Ben Snider of McKinney preaches for them, each fourth Sunday.

We had the pleasure of visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stratton, but they were absent. We learned that Mrs. Stratton, accompanied by Mesdames Willie Spurgeon and Jim Graham, had gone to Wylie to visit the latter's brother and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Burch, who are confined to their home with sickness.

Mrs. E. E. Graham is our new correspondent at Lucas and will report weekly for the benefit of our readers. Mrs. Graham is also press Reporter for the local P. T. A. and we know she will receive the cooperation of the entire community in gathering its news and reporting them for The Daily Courier-Gazette and Weekly Democrat-Gazette.

Our first stop in Lucas was at the general merchantile store of W. D. Morrow. Here, we found some fifteen or twenty men and boys gathered, some playing games, but all taking part in the discussion of sports. The victory of the Lucas girls quintet over the McKinney Class B girls, the night before caused much enthusiasm. Lucas has a three-teacher school. Prof. James Pearce is principal; Miss Grace Adams and Miss Clara Holbrook, assistants. They have an enrollment of forty-six pupils.

Prof. Pearce and Miss Adams are the coaches.

The School Board is composed of E. Eustace Graham, Chairman; R. S. Parr and Hobart McCollom.

Lucas boasts a live P. T. A. with Mrs. Henry Millian President; Mrs H. M. McCollom, Vice-President; Mrs. Roy Biggs, Secretary; Miss Grace Adams, Treasurer; Mrs. E. E. Graham, Press Reporter. It being their regular meeting day we were invited by Mrs. Bob Parr to stay and meet with them. We gladly accepted the invitation.

Preceding the business session presided over by Mrs. McCollom.

In the absence of the President, the following program was rendered by the pupils:

Reading, Louise Strickland.

"America" led by Miss Holbrook.

Reading, Doris Roland and Iola Faye.

Motion song, Miss Adams' room.

Reading, Joe Pearce.

Leader from program on "Punctuality," Mrs. McCollom.

"Tardiness, a Social Nuisance," Miss Holbrook.

"Parents Won't Help," Mrs. Hallie Biggs.

"The Clock As an Aid," Miss Adams.

"Mother," Mrs. James Pearce.

"A Good Example," Mrs. McCollium.

The members present were: Mesdames James Pearce, E. E. Graham, Bob Parr, Jesse Roland, Hobart McCollum, Roy Biggs, R. C. Strickland, John Deat, Eva Lewis, Mrs. Adams, Misses Grace Adams and Clara Holbrook. The Association voted and set a date to meet and landscape the school grounds, make flower beds and plant shrubbery.

Delicious refreshments were served.
