Court Rolls - Royal Manor of Wye 1285

[all manors of Crundale came under jurisdiction of Wye]

Kept at PRO Chancery Lane London (not Kew)

A very extensive but incomplete series from 1285 to 1530. So only covered up to mid 15th Cent.

Two types of Court are covered viz:

i) Manor Court, held every 3 weeks. All tenants had to appear

unless they sent an excuse by another person- they were "essoined". No "essoin" meant a fine, usually 2d or 3d.The tenants came from all over Wye town (ie Pett St, part of Hassell St etc) & from various other places over which Wye Manor had jurisdiction - e.g. Brook, Eastwell, Crundale, Shottenden, Sevington etc.

Minor cases such as petty assault, pleas of debt etc were tried before a jury of plaintiffs' defendants & neighbours, i.e. if both came from Crundale, 15 men from same village would be ordered to appear at Court & from there 12 men would be chosen to form a jury. Convicted persons might have to pay damages to injured party & also a fine to the manor ( usually 6d).

Many people were reported for breaking the assize of bread & ale which meant a fine.

 ii) Hundred Court. The borghselder had to report there with 4 fellow villagers. (see p39 of book).

 The following abbreviations have been made;

J (member of Jury)

A (broke assize of bread or ale & fined)

All entries are under the Borough of Tremworth unless otherwise stated. This is more or less equivalent of the modern borough of Crundale.

Bollyng Richard 1513.09.29 - 1514.09.29 Godmersham Manor Farmer in 4th year of 7 year lease. Gives a list of repairs carried out to what appears to be the mill and rectory - giving costs for carpenters 5 tons of timber etc etc. Looks very interesting and there should be a lease and accounts for the previous years.
