memorandum

In further reference to your DO No 653 of 7/1/1920 and in continuation of my reply thereto.

I regret to have to inform you that I have received embarkation orders today only.

I have arrived at this Depot on the 16th March (which was rather later than I had anticipated) to find that no passages were available for officers on leave to the UK for some time.

At the end of March a GRO affecting English leave was published and after trying in vain for some time to get away I gave up the idea of leave and applied for demobilisation, a course which promised a quicker return home.

I feel that the Civil Commissioner should be acquainted of this as I would not like to cause him more inconvenience and I could not possibly hope to be back in this country for several months even if there were no further delays.

I therefore wish to leave the matter in the hands of the Civil Commissioner and will call on Captain G.C. Stephenson the India Office to learn of his decision.

I do not like to have to write a letter which practically throws away all possible chances of work under the Civil Commission in the future but in justice to him there appears to be no other course open.
