If I Could Turn Back Time
My Long-Ago Babies
Kirsten and Jeff
If I had my child to raise over again,
I'd fingerpaint more, and point the fingers less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I'd teach less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love.
These are my children who are now grown and beginning families of their own. I would wish for them the best that life has to offer and hope that I have at least taught them the basics of survival. I would also wish that they would take to heart the message above - especially when they feel that they have lost patience with their children or don't have the time to devote to them right now.
There are certainly many parts of my life that I would not like to live over again, but I wish I could have the opportunity to improve on the parenting skills that I practiced back in those youthful days. Age does bring wisdom and a greater appreciation for the little things in life, which are ultimately the most important.
