Casey Family - How are they related to my great great great grandma, Ruth Casey Ray?

A Casey Bible / Hix Jones Ray / Nathaniel Ray / James Carroll Ray / Start Page

Other surnames: Yandell, Kirksey, Edwards, Higgins, Bean

Most information provided by Gayla J. Casey

Ruth Casey Ray was the first wife of Hix Jones Ray. They probably married in Tennessee - while researchers disagree if it was in Williamson County or maybe Wayne County. Her husband Hix was born in Brunswick County, VA, moved on to Allen County, KY, floated down the trapped furs while travelling to New Orleans where he sold the furs, probably followed the Natchez Trace to the Wayne County, Tennessee area where his brother Eaton Ray had moved. About 1823, Hix obtained land in the Jackson Purchase area of Kentucky. Together Ruth and Hix had several children. They are both buried in the Ray Family Cemetary on former Ray land in Marshall County, Kentucky.

Abner Casey was also an earlier settler to the Jackson Purchase area and one might wonder if they made the journey together. There are other Casey women who married Ray men. Check out the family of Eaton Ray for more connections. Remember Eaton lived in Wayne County, Tennessee.

CASEY NOTES

According to an index of land grants, John Casey was granted 200 acres of land in Berkeley Co on Duncan's Creek on Nov. 1, 1765. In 1765, Berkeley Co was one of 4 counties in SC Duncan's Creek is located in what later became Newberry Co SC. During this period of time, settlers were being granted land almost free of charge to encourage settlement of the area. The head of each family was allowed 100 acres for himself and an additional 50 acres for each member of his family. Therefore, in 1765, it is most likely that John was married and had one child. John Casey was the father of at least one son: "ABNER CASEY".

This fact is also documented in an indenture between General Levi Casey and Abner Casey which is dated 1777. (Levi and John were brothers). This indenture involves the sale of John Casey's 1765 land grant of 200 acres. John Casey is stated as the father of ABNER CASEY & that Abner was the proper heir of the land. This land was shown as on the south side of the Encore River & bounded on the south east on John Casey. This land grant implies that John was still living on the Encore River as late as 1775. In 1777 Abner Casey was stated as being the proper heir of John's land in 1777, it is believed that John Casey died in Newberry Co SC between 1775 & 1777.

Gayla's note: I wonder if Samuel had a brother Abner Casey from Warren Co KY & Marshall Co, KY. Abner born about 1786 SC but the 1790 census SC states there was only 1 boy under 16 years of age? Could this be an error in dates?
