10. Moses McCleary was born on Apr 18 1815 in Cass county, Michigan. Birth date is the same, but location is given as One Leg township,Tuscarawas, Ohio, in the Chapman genealogy. He owned a farm given to him by his father when he married Margaret Perry about Oct 18 1835 in Cass county, Michigan. Moses sold the farm when they moved to Iowa. He moved to Wapello county, Iowa, after Oct 18 1835 from Cass county, Michigan. He owned land where they lived after Oct 18 1835 in Wapello county, Iowa. He was the operator of a mill between 1836 and 1856 in Birmingham, Iowa. "While in Iowa, Moses ran a mill in Birmingham, south of Libertyville." He moved to Polk county, Iowa in 1850 from Wapello county, Iowa. He resided from 1850 to 1856 in Polk county, Iowa. "Wes and Marion McCleary now live near Moses old home." He owned land after 1850 in Polk county, Iowa. He moved to Kansas by covered wagon in 1856 from Polk county, Iowa. Moses did not want to live near his relatives, so when some of his brothers and a sister moved to Iowa, Moses and Margaret moved west to Kansas. Kansas had been made a territory on May 21, 1854. Fort Leavenworth and Delaware City were the only towns until 1856. In that year there were only 1000 white men in Kansas, mostly in Leavenworth. Gardner was built in 1857. He owned land grant property about 1861 in Kansas territory. Kansas was admitted to the Union on January 29, 1861, the same year the Homestead Act was passed. Moses was among the first 16 white men in Kansas to be given land grants, which consisted of 160 acres. He also bought some land from Charlie Blue Jacket, an Indian who lived to be 101 years old. The Indian built his home of solid walnut and it is still standing at the Shawnee Mission. He owned about 240 acres in Kansas and 50 acres in Warren county, Iowa on Mar 26 1865. At his death, his estate consisted of $1370.25 and the 290 acres. 40 acres of that sold for $100 less a fee of $48. He died on Mar 26 1865 or Apr 26 1865 in Gardner, Kansas. At the entry of his date of death in the Family History Albums "or April" was handwritten beneath the typescript entry of "March". Date is given as May 28, 1865, in the Chapman genealogy. Moses died of cancer of the face. He was buried after Mar 26 1865 in Gardner, Kansas. He signed a will in Gardner, Kansas. Elias was the administrator of Moses' will. Moses left $1.00 each to William, Sarah Jane, and Moses Jr. The rest of the estate was left to Margaret for as long as she was his widow. The remaining amount was then to go to Elias, Mary, Alexander, Lemuel, and Francis. His coffin cost $8.00 and a lot at Gardner cost $5.00. He was married to Margaret Perry on Oct 18 1835 in Cass county, Michigan. The family's "home place" near Olathe and Gardner, Kansas, was a log cabin. Two descriptions are given of its location, but both result in the same place on the map. One says it was 1 mile south of and 4 miles west of Olathe. The other says it was 1 mile east of and 4 miles north of Gardner (with a buffalo wallow 1/4 mile to the west).

She was born in Ohio while her family was on the way to Michigan. She was
declared insane on Apr 2 1877 in Kansas. The problem was first noticed in 1873,
resulting from hereditary causes and Thyroid Fever. Elias, as administrator
of Moses' estate, paid her room and board. She was sent to Osawatomie for a while,
then stayed with different children. She died on Mar 26 1884 in Lenape. At
the entry of her date of death "or April" was handwritten beneath the
typescript entry of "March". She died at the home of her son William.
Chapman genealogy also listed her date of death as March 26, 1884. She was buried
after Mar 26 1884 in Lenape. She was buried at Lenape because the water of the
Kaw River was too high to get across. Her funeral cost $280.00. Children were:
