Ancestors of Winifred Mabel Pitman

FOURTH GENERATION

10. Elijah Preston Hall was born in 1814 or 1815 in Ohio. Age 20-30 on 1840 Census, Saltlick Township, Perry County, Ohio.
Age 35 on November 11, 1850 Census, Randolph County, Indiana.
Age 45 on August 8, 1860 Census, Palmyra, Macoupin County, Illinois.
Age 65 on June 7, 1880 Census, Crow Creek, Laramie County, Wyoming.

He was a carpenter on Nov 11 1850 in Randolph county, Indiana. He had a boarder, Thomas Bryan, laborer, age 22, born in Ohio, residing in his home on Nov 11 1850 in Randolph county, Indiana. He had a Catherine Hall (mother or gmother?), age 73, born in Virginia, residing in his home on Nov 11 1850 in Randolph county, Indiana. He was a laborer on Aug 8 1860 in Palmyra, Macoupin county, Illinois. He was a retired mechanic on Jun 7 1880. He resided in the home of William Pitman on Jun 7 1880 in Crow Creek, Laramie county, Wyoming. He died on Aug 31 1891 in Atchison county, Missouri. He is listed on the 1880 census. Date of death received from George and Lu Quillen. See source reference.

Questions and speculations sent by me to George & Lu Quillen, Sept., 1998:

This is regarding, as I have listed, Jeanette Luthella Hall's birth date as 23 Feb 1860, from Steve's information, when compared with the census records:

Age 18, given on 1880 census, but birthdate in 1860 would have made her 20 yrs 3 mo.
Age 5/12 on August 8, 1860, census indicates birth would have been February or March, which agrees with February 23 date from Steve's report.
Both of these may indicate that one daughter with this name and born in 1860 died within a year or two, then another daughter was given the same name. (Jenetta R. versus Jenette or Jeanette L.?) Since that was a fairly common occurence until about the beginning of this century, is this a possibility? I am assuming, of course, that the census information would have been given by a parent and is likely accurate.

The second question regards your suspicion about Catherine Hall, age 73, in the 1850 census. It would seem, from what I have, that E.P. Hall was born about 1814 or 1815. Catherine would have been about 38 then and, as you say, possibly his mother. However, since the census of 1850 lists his mother's birthplace as Tennessee and Catherine's as Virginia, the question arises. The information would likely have been taken from one person or more than one while together. It seems unlikely that one person would give the differing answers or, if more than one present, that the difference would go unnoticed. (It still is possible that there was an error in recording it, etc.) Several thoughts come to mind about the meaning of this difference.

If one takes half of Catherine's age of about 38 at the time of E.P.'s birth, the result of 19 might indicate (though close) two generations - she "could" have been his grandmother! Otherwise, of course, she may have been a widowed or spinster aunt or great-aunt. Also, considering the various birth locations, a possible family migration seems to appear:
Catherine - Virginia
E.P.'s mother - Tennessee
E.P. - Ohio
children - Indiana, then Illinois

Also noting that E.P.'s father was from Maryland, adjacent to Virginia rather than Tennessee, the families may have been associated before a move to Tennessee where E.P.'s mother was born. It could also indicate that another "Maryland" Hall married this "Virginia" Catherine, making her a closely associated relative.

He was married to Cyrene Strate on May 25 1840 in Perry county, Ohio.

11. Cyrene Strate was born on Dec 17 1822 in Ohio. Age 15-20 on 1840 Census, Saltlick Township, Perry County, Ohio.

Age 18, given on 1880 census, but birthdate in 1860 would have made her 20 yrs 3 mo. Both of these may indicate that one daughter with this name and born in 1860 died within a year or two, then another daughter was given the same name. (?) February 23, 1860, is also provided in her obituary and a family bible page. See George Quillen correspondence "source" reference.
