I will briefly give you my ancestry line...as far as I have learned it, in three years of writing letters, watching Soundex census tapes, and searching the internet.
There are still branches missing from my family "tree", and I am hoping and praying that those who read this page, may have the information I need...and perhaps I, in turn, can help you by furnishing some information you do not have.
I will list the generations in backward order...from myself, going back as far as I know.
1-B - ME - Virginia Louise Eckert, Born to Jesse LeRoy Eckert and Nova Madden 7/13/26 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Married to John M. O'Shea, I have 5 grown children* and 10 grandchildren**.
I also am a Licensed and Ordained Minister, and co-pastor of Word of God Ministries, which furnishes a Home Page which is a church service for shut-ins, here on geocities, at Heartland/Ranch 4395.
1-A - MY HALF BROTHER - John Edwin Eckert Sr., born to Jesse LeRoy Eckert and Nellie Jeanette Schrenk* on 8/28/1904; died 1/22/1972 in Ft. Worth Texas. He was married to (#1) Virginia (Flowers) Smith Kerr and they had one son, John Edwin Eckert Jr. b 1945, in or near Philadelphia, Pa. They were divorced in the early 1960's and he married #2)Jeanne (?) in Ft. Worth Texas, about 1965. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth, Texas.
*(Nelle Jeanette Schrenk Eckert died in Chattanooga, Tenn on 4/23/1924 and is buried with her parents John and Christina in the St. Mary's Grove Cemetery in Kenton, Ohio.)
John Edwin Eckert Jr, son of John Sr. and Virginia, became a dentist in/near Doylestown Pa, married Mary Waldron of the Bronx, NY in 1972, and they had three children: Matthew, John Edwin III and Sheila Eckert.
John Jr. passed away around 1985.
2 - MY FATHER: Jesse LeRoy Eckert born to Edwin S. Eckert and Malinda L. Shaw on 3/26/1881 in Stokes Twp, Logan Co, Ohio. He was a railroad man all of his life, finally working for the Southern Railroad in Chattanooga Tenn as a Boilermaker until his death on 3/20/1944. He was married twice: (1) Nelle Jeanette Schrenk of Ohio (#2) Nova L. Madden, born in Lindale Ga.
He only had two children: John Edwin Eckert Sr. 1904 and Virginia L. Eckert b 1926.
3 - MY GRANDFATHER - Edwin S. Eckert, born to Lemente (aka Lemonte, Lemoyne, Lemunday) Eckert and Nancy Vantries in Hardin Co, Ohio on 7/9/1851.
He married Malinda L. Shaw on 5/10/1870 in Kenton, Ohio. They lived at various times in Bellefontaine, Stokes Twp Logan Co, Jackson Center and Botkins Ohio. They lived in Botkins from about 1885 to 1900. They owned property (Lots 18 and 19) at the corner of South street and Sycamore, in Botkins.
I have not been able to learn ANYTHING about the parents or ancestry of Malinda L. Shaw Eckert.
I believe she died in 1926-28; if anyone knows what state (Michigan? Illinois?) she was living in when she died I would love to have that information. It would help me trace who her parents were.
Edwin S. Eckert died in Botkins, Ohio on 6/11/1900. He is buried with his wife and daughter Gracie Maud in the 7th Day Baptist Cemetery in Jackson Center, Ohio.
Edwin S. and Malinda Eckert had 9 children: Ada F. and Susan O. (called Ola) in 1871 and 1873; Edwin W and Walter E Eckert in 1875 and 1876; Clement Orvil Eckert* b in January 1879 (*he lived and died in Leonidas, Michigan); Jesse LeRoy Eckert (my father) 3/26/1881, Gracie Maud b 5/31 or 6/1/1884, died 10/5/1887; Harry S.V. b July or August 1887 and Mabel L. or Laura Mabel, b 1890, married Harry Skinner,lived in Pittsburgh, Kansas.
REF: Ohio Census 1880 & 1910 and other sources.
NOTE: I have located descendents of Clement, and have information about Mabel and Gracie Maud.
I believe that Ada F married Henry Kuhn and lived in Findlay Ohio, had 3 daughters and a son, then after Henry's death, married Oliver Wren, whom she knew when she was a teenager, probably in Jackson Center or Botkins Ohio area. Oliver predeceased her, as well.
My letters to Kuhns in the Findlay area have not produced any information, as yet.
4 - MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER - Lemente Eckert - (also known as Lemoyne, Lemont, Lemot, Lemunday), born around 1806-1811 in Fairfield County, Ohio, to Jacob L. Eckert and Catherine (Kitty) *Shellenbarger(Shallenberger).
(*Shallenberger, Shellenbarger, Shollenberger...many different spellings; ancestry of Catherine Shellenbarger Eckert traced back to Germany/Switzerland in the 1500's. Anyone interested in this line may contact Virginia Carpenter Jansen, gjansen@3-cities.com who has done this extensive search.)
Lemente/Lemoyne was orphaned while still a minor; (Catherine died around 1816; Jacob died about 1824);Isaac Coons (Koontz) was appointed his guardian until he came of age.
Lemente married Nancy Vantries (Van Tries)(daughter of Isaac and Mary, originally of Lancaster Co. Pa, sister of Mary (Mr. Leohner), Elizabeth (Mr. Bitten); John; Samuel; Susan (Mr. Wilcox); and Catherine who died 12/27/1831 in Fairfield Co. Ohio.
Lemente and Nancy lived in Fairfield Co. Ohio in 1830, according to that census. They had one child at that time.
Some time later they moved to Bucks Twp, Hardin Co, Ohio, where they are shown on the 1860 Census with 4 of their younger children, David, Ziba(Zeba), Angeline and Edwin S.Eckert.
David died at age 25; Ziba** married Anna Shepherd, Angeline married Jacob Sutermeister, and Edwin S. Eckert married Malinda L. Shaw. (**Ziba or Zeba's grandson, Robert Worley Eckert, of Marion Ohio, a retired architect, has done an extensive genealogy on Lemente's line, including Ziba or Zeba, and their descendents.)
On the 1860 census Lemente is listed as a farmer.
Their older children were Jane (married Simpson Price)(Had son John Lemont Price, she died when he was born); Sara (married Solomany Agey); Susannah (married Robert Hubbard);and Rebecca (married Jeremiah Chamberlin).
On May 9th or 10th, 1870, Nancy accompanied her youngest son, Edwin S, to the Kenton Ohio courthouse, where she signed papers for his marriage on 5/10/1870 to Malinda L. Shaw. Malinda had turned 19 on March 2nd; Edwin S. would not be 19 until July 9, 1870.
Lemente died in Kenton Ohio on August 10th, 1861. Nancy died many years later, around 1880. (where did she die?) They are buried, with David, in the Sieg Cemetery in Kenton Ohio.
The geneology researcher who has helped me research this (Kenton) information is Estella Hites, of Kenton, Ohio.
Her e-mail address is black-hites@kenton.com.
5 - MY GREAT-GREAT GRANDFATHER - Jacob L. Eckert - son of George (middle initial ?) Eckert (Sr) and Catherine Ludwig, born in Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania in the 1770's.
Baptized in the Zeltenreich (Seltenreich) Reformed Church, Bethany, Ephrata, Pa,,now Zeltenreich United Church of Christ, New Holland, Pa);
Jacob L. came to Berne Twp, Fairfield Co. Ohio in 1798 with his brother George (Jr), to settle on, and develop, property owned by their father, George (Sr), per patent dated 6/13/1811.
The Hockhocking/Hocking River and "Pleasant Run" were waterways that ran through this property. George Sr. (of Lancaster Co Pa) gave this property to son George, specifying that he would have all water rights to build a dam or mill etc.
A history book of that Fairfield Co. Ohio area states that he built the second grist mill in Berne Twp on the HH/H River.
Carol Swinehart (cshart@greenapple.com) is the genealogy historian and researcher who has helped me with this research. She is VP of the Fairfield Co. Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, and list-owner of a list for Fairfield County research. OHFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com
MISC. INFO. - FAIRFIELD COUNTY (ECKERT) MARRIAGES EARLY 1800'S
Catherine died in about 1816, and Jacob L. married Rebecca Johnston. (Rebecca's maiden name was Canode. She had been married to Jacob Johnston, and after Jacob Eckert's death around 1824/26, she married Jacob Ream and Jacob Hine.)
One child, George L (or S)was born to Jacob L. and Rebecca, around 1818.
After Jacob L's death, George Canode (Rebecca's father or brother?) was named guardian of the "infant"..Document dated Sept. 11, 181(?)
Guardians were assigned to the 4 children from his first marriage to Catherine Shallenberger, as follows:
*SALLY - minor (under age 12) daughter of Jacob L. Eckert: Henry Shallenberger, guardian, dated June 21, 1819
Another document assigns Samuel Shellenbarger as guardian for Sally.(dated June 17, 181?)
*LEMUNDAY (Lemoyne, Lemente), minor son of Jacob L. Eckert; Isaac Coons (Koontz) Guardian, dated Dec. 22, 1825(?)
*LEWIS, minor son of Jacob L. Eckert, In 2 different documents, dated 6/17/1819 and the other undated, Henry Shellenbarger and Samuel Shellenbarger are named guardians.
*HENRY (or JACOB?) - I believe his guardian was John Graybill.
Jacob L. Eckert and Catherine Shellenbarger Eckert are buried in the Crawfis-Emery Cemetery in Lancaster, Ohio. This is a small cemetery situated on a steep slope on the side of a wooded hill.
Their graves are at the top of the hill, on the right side.
About a mile away, on the same road, is located the Ream Cemetery, where many of the Ream family are buried.
A couple of hundred feet from the Ream Cemetery, the road crosses over the HockHocking/Hocking River. At this point, it appears to be merely a trickling stream, not a river.
6 - MY GREAT-GREAT-GREAT GRANDFATHER - George Eckert (Sr) - lived in (Bethany, Paradise, New Holland, Ephrata?) Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania. Born about 1743, died in 1824 in Lancaster Co, Pa.; Married Catherine Ludwig 10/21/1770 in Lancaster Co, Pa.
(Catherine, b 1751, d 2/7/1819, was daughter of Jacob Ludwig and Elizabeth (?)
(Still trying to locate his exact death date and burial place).
Their children were:
*Elizabeth b 10/18/1771(no husband named);
*Mary b 5/9/1780(m George (or Isaac)Diller);d 10/11/1852 in Earl Twp, Pa.
*Sarah (Isaac Hutter or Rutter on 5/18/1813)
*Susannah b(?), m John Graybill*, Nathaniel Lightner (she had daughter named Sarah Ann Lightner);
(John Graybill was Guardian for 1 of Jacob L.'s children)
*Margaret b 1/8/1771,(m Hugh Pinkerton)
*Jacob L. Eckert b 1770's(?) d abt 1824 in Fairfield Co Ohio; m #1 Catherine Shellenberger 10/1807, #2 Rebecca Canode Johnston 2/1817.
*George (Jr) b 9/12/1773
*Catherine b 4/14/1778
*Salome b 10/3/1782
George (Sr) owned several properties in addition to the one in Fairfield County, Ohio:
*57 acres in Dauphin County, bought from Conrad Schaeffer;
*Upper Paxton Twp, Dauphin Co.
*Sudbury Twp, property on Pequa Creek.
Note: My thanks to Barbara Roberts at 72223.2672@compuserve.com for the information which confirmed "which George" was my g-g-g-grandfather, and the identity of his parents, which I had not known. She is also descended from this family line.
..and another document similar to this, involving George L. Eckert and Jacob L. Eckert (were they Lemente/Lemoyne's brothers?), and property in Fairfield Co, involving the Krout Mill, and the same persons named in the first document, as well as Ann M. Eckert, widow of Henry S. Eckert; dated 3/7/1884.
NOTE: The above is NOT the Jacob L. Eckert who was my g-g- grandfather; but these may be his sons or their descendants, or those of his brother George.
Relationship not yet established.

DO THOSE NAMES SOUND FAMILIAR? PERHAPS THEY'RE YOUR ANCESTORS TOO?
In the last three years, I have received many letters from other Eckerts, who don't seem to be related to me, but who are also searching for their own roots.
As time permits, I will try to summarize those on this page.
For the time being, I have kept all these letters, and will cross-reference information in them with any inquiries I receive from readers of this Home Page, to see if a match can be found.
I correspond with Alan Eckert, of Virginia, who is descended from Alan and Christian Eckert, also of Pennsylvania.
And I also correspond with Clarence Moury who is descended from John Stukey who was married (in Fairfield Co. Ohio) to Catherine Eckert.
It is my hope that this page will serve as a locator source for many Eckerts...not only my direct line.
Feel free to contact me privately at voshea@suffolk.lib.ny.us, if you have any questions or information.
I will be glad to hear from you, and I will reply, either on this page, or privately.
There are three churches in the New Holland and Paradise Pa areas, in which many Eckerts were founding members and whose cemeteries hold many Eckert gravestones.
They are the Zeltenreich United Church of Christ, formerly the Zeltenreich Reformed Church, in New Holland, Pa; St. Stephens United Church of Christ, formerly a Reformed church, also in New Holland, and Calvary Monument Bible Church in Paradise Pa.
I visited the Zeltenreich church early in October, took photos of the (readable) stones, and of the church and cemetery.
It's interesting that the inscriptions on many of the older gravestones are written in German.
Mr. Martin Wanner, an official in that church, allowed me to copy the information below from church records about those Eckerts who are buried there.
They are:

3/2/98 - I now have received a printed history of the Calvary Monument Bible Church in Paradise, Pa. Apparently it has changed denominations and leadership several times, making it hard to locate old records.
The cemetery adjacent to it is not owned by the church, and was overseen for many years by a local family, but they can no longer do this, and remaining family members are uncertain if there are any old records or deeds for the burials there.
Mr. Herb Fisher of that congregation has kindly gone to great trouble to examine all the headstones in that cemetery and write down the names and dates of all Eckerts buried there.
They are:
Levi L. Eckert - born 1859, no death date given
Nellie B Eckert (his wife) b 1885, d 1929
Mary L. Eckert - b 3/8/1893 d 2/13/1945
George C. Eckert - b 10/20/1864 d 10/22/1948

Uriah Eckert - b 9/18/1858 d 11/16/1936
Mary L. (his wife) b 4/10/1860 d 2/18/1948
William H Eckert - b 1925 d 1975 (was PFC in WWII)
Infants:

John M. Eckert b 3/15/1951 d 3/17/1995
William Eckert b 10/9/1777 d 2/22/1856**
** The William Eckert above is believed to be the first person buried in this cemetery; tradition has it that he loved his horse and insisted that it be buried there, with a monument to mark it's place of burial, then he asked to be buried there, next to his beloved horse.
This monument to the horse, is where the name Calvary "Monument" Bible church came from.
Levi Eckert d 8/22/....18????
Lily L Eckert (his wife) b 1818 d 1871
William Eckert, son of Levi and Lily, b 1/1840, d 10/8/1862* (killed in battle of Chaplin Hills, Ky, in the Civil War)
William Eckert b 1852 no death date given
Mary L. (his wife) b 1847 d 1935

My heartfelt appreciation to Herb Fisher for furnishing all of the above information re Calvary Monument Cemetery, and to Church Secretary Mary Jane Hershey, whose father was pastor of that church for many years, for her sincere efforts to help us which included sending me the history of that church.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have written to another local church, St. Stephens in New Holland Pa, but to date (3/14/1998) have had no response from them.
(I've been told that families gravitated between these three churches, often due to a preference for services in German or English.)
If you live near those churches, perhaps you might want to visit there and see what you could discover for yourself.
Since I live on Long Island, in New York, that's not so easy for me to do.
If you DO get any more information from them, or photos of headstones, would you share it with me? I'd be very grateful and would gladly reimburse you for all costs!
I'm also researching ship passenger lists from the 1700's (Source, internet, The Olive Tree)to find Eckerts, and have found one, so far (Johann Peter Eckert), and several others with similar names (which could have been changed through the years).
I have been told that probably my Eckert ancestors came from Palatine to Pennsylvania in the early 1700's.
