Sancho Family History
Around the 1850's, Young A-Samko came to Trinidad by boat from a small village in China north of Macao. He came as an indentured labourer just after slavery was abolished. His wife Elizabeth came over a year or two later from China. In order to obtain land and convert to Christianity he had to have a certificate of citizenship. The British authorities (Trinidad and Tobago at the time was a colony of the United Kingdom)gave him the name Jerome Sancho which was close to A-Samko(3rd Brother), similar to a Spanish name, when his real surname should have been Young (or Yung as in other districts of China). Jerome and Elizabeth had six children. Their first born son was named Joseph(My Grandfather). Joseph eventually married Amelia Acham who was the half-sister to Eugene Chen(twice foreign minister in China under Dr. Sun Yat Sen and the Wuhan Government in the late 1920's). Joseph and Amelia's youngest son was named Percy and I am the youngest son of Percy and Mildred. To this day there is a stretch of road in Trinidad called "Sancho Road" however, it is in the country area near Mayo Village. I am presently living in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and I have three children, Derek, Robert and Diahann.
