COSMOS MAN HEAD OF MEEKER COUNTY LAST MAN'S CLUB

At the annual meeting of the Meeker County Last Man's Club held at Cosmos Monday evening, Fred Hesser of Cosmos was elected president. The Rev. O. Leonard Nelson of Cloquet was elected vice president and chaplain; Reuben C. Erickson of Litchfield secretary; Norbert H. Ley of Watkins, treasurer and Emil Aspaas of Willman, public relations.
At the meeting Monday night, Claude Thompson of Willman, the president presided. The group paid tribute to the deceased 37 members including the three who died the past year.
The members of the club are from Litchfield, Dassal, Cosmos, Eden Valley, Watkins, Hutchinson and Willmar.
The members who attended the meeting Monday night from a distance were Everett Clinton of River Falls, Wisconsin and the Rev. Nelson from Cloquet.
Mrs. Earl Raske, Miss Cynthia Grussendorf and Randy Grussendorf, all of Cosmos, furnished the musical part of the program.
The 1965 meeting will be held at Litchfield with the Dassal members as host.
The Cosmos American Legion Auxiliary served a ham dinner before the meeting at the high school cafeteria.

HORACE HESSER, HELPED START U.M. CHURCH

Funeral services for long-time Cosmos resident Horace Hesser, 95, were held Wednesday, January 29, at the United Methodist Church, Cosmos. Rev. Mary Tappe officiated. Soloist was Elaine Berrry, pianist was Julie Koehler. Pallbearers were Dale Hesser, David Hesser, Bruce Hesser, Mark Hesser, Brian Hesser, Norman Straumann. Interment was in the Cosmos City Cemetery.
Horace Frederick Hesser was born February 10, 1896 at Somers, Iowa. He was the son of Henry Grant and Susan (Mingles) Hesser. He was baptized at Somers, Iowa, and attended school at Somers and later graduated from mechanical trace school in Kansas City. He served his country during World War I as a flight instructor in the U.S. Naval Air Corps.
On September 26, 1923, he was united in marriage to Etta Vern Dolder at Humboldt, Iowa. After the war, Fred worked for the U.S. Gypsum Company at Fort Dodge, Iowa, then was in the implement business at Humboldt. They moved to Minnesota in 1936, and farmed until 1951 after which he operated the Hesser Hardware in Cosmos until retirement.
Fred was a member of the Last Man's Club and a long time member of the American Legion. He was one of the founders of the Cosmos United Methodist Church. He was also on a commettee formed to consolidate schools into what is now Cosmos Consolidated School District #461. He was an honorary member of the Cosmos Lions.
In failing health, he became a resident at the Emmanuel Home in Litchfield where he passed away on Sunday morning, January 26, reaching the age of 95 years 11 months and 16 days.
He is survived by two sons, Harold and his wife Jeanne Hesser of Cosmos and Gerald and his wife Dana Hesser of Prior Lake; seven grandchildren, Steven, Gregory, Dale, David, Bruce, Mark and Brian Hesser and by two great grandchildren, Cari and Nathan Hesser.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Etta in 1981, brothers John, Joseph, Archie and Harold and by two sisters, Fanny and Gladys.
