BEDSPREAD to BEDSPREAD
They were refined, educated, wealthy....the elite!
Diamonds on their fingers....leather on their feet!
Servants to cater, to every little whim,
Until the "CRASH" and the "DEPRESSION" came in!
They were used to spending, a small amount of cash,
For huge bags of groceries....before the BIG CRASH!
Now, they must bring cash, in a HUGE sack,
For a tiny bag of food, that they could take back!
Bank Accounts were NIL and all the money gone!
Traded crystal, jewels, silver, as sad days ticked on and on,
At last, the mother could only find,
One valuable item....so they could dine....
On a few vegetables, from a farmer they knew,
She got busy and unravelled her new....
Beautiful, crocheted bedspread...knitted pairs of socks,
It's amazing how we cope, after many hard knocks!
Traded socks, for turnips, carrots and potatoes!
At Christmas...no turkey, presents, tinsel or bows!
Finally, she had just one pair left to trade,
The last of the vegetable and stocking charade!
When she gave that pair, the farmer's wife said,
"Oh, good! I'm needing more for my new bedspread!"
You see, she was unravelling and crocheting anew,
A beautiful bedspread.....THIS STORY IS TRUE!

This is a story, that was told to me, by a friend from Brazil. It did
not
take place in Canada, but I am sure there were many similar situations.
So
much energy was expended, in order to satisfy each families needs.
It would
have been easier to just give the original bedspread, for several weeks
of
vegetables.
