FAR AWAY FIELDS LOOK GREEN

(Life in the thirties)

Three Depression Years!! No hope in sight!
Bills and such worry, both day and night!
A long, weary Winter and now comes Spring,
We needed a change, in a place, that would bring,
Good fortune....or at least, a better, new day!
Sold what stock we could! Gave the rest away!
Drove west, with just two trunks and our car,
No looking back!! We had to go very far!!
Straight ahead, down that dusty, old road,
Just the two of us, with our meagre, shabby load!
And eyes, that focused, on Alberta ahead,
New hope, to drown the sad times and dread!
"One more border to go!"....my wife sang this song,
As our old jalopy, huffed and puffed along!
To the Promised Land, with orchards so grand,
Picking ripe peaches....was our dream....our plan!
But, when we got there....after a few days,
We were sick, of eating peaches, in ten different ways!
The wife started yearning, for what was back there!
I stepped up and told her, that I DID NOT CARE!
We were here, to stay...and could not return,
No sense complaining, or starting to yearn,
Two years later, we were both just fine!
New home! New life! Both hers and mine!
Like a flowing river.....life....goes....on....and on,
Just like it says, in that special song!
