There are two creatures, here on my land,
Who never fear, either animal or man!
A skunk, who's used to having space,
A porcupine, with every quill in place!
They just walk slowly, free from fear,
And nothing, for miles around, will interfere!
Skunks have no friends, except other skunks, you see,
And porcupines give you their quills...for free!
Our two, black Labradors learned long ago,
How much it hurts, to bite quills and go,
Off to the vet, but next time they'd do their best,
To take on a porcupine....'twas no contest!
Both Labs would retreat...so wounded and scared!
They didn't realize, that dogs aren't prepared!
They never gave up, thinking that some day,
They would get that porcupine...
No!! No way!!

Apparently our two, black Labradors were not as intelligent, as the
raccoons, because no matter how often they encountered, a mouth full
of
quills, they did not learn to stay away from porcupines. Sometimes,
Penny,
the female dog, would bring a dead groundhog and proudly leave it on
my
doorstep, thinking that I would be pleased. I did not appreciate these
animal sacrifices!
On one occasion, a small groundhog, frightened by the dog, jumped into
a
bucket, near the house and I had to hold the dog and kick the bucket
over,
to allow it to escape. Poor little creature! It's teeth were rattling
and
it's whole body shaking, for he was sure, that he had just faced death.
