A moose through the ice!! Such a hopeless thing!
Just his head showing....what help could they bring?
Get a noose!!! Some men!!! And a truck to pull, too!!!
We need a noose.... for a moose.... and help from you!
Such a long struggle....such fear....and then!
With front feet still thrashing, the rope went under him!
But, now he went deeper.....and the seconds ticked by,
The men pulled even harder....it seemed foolish to try!
They thought all was lost, when suddenly, more proof,
As through the icy water, came one small, moose hoof!
They cheered and pulled harder and eventually,
The moose was dragged out and all cheered, with glee!
He looked exhausted, as if already dead.....
They all stood around, feeling such dread,
Tears in their eyes, until one little, child said,
"Look!" as he raised, his large, antlered head!
He slowly struggled...wobbled....up to his full height,
Once again, a majestic, free, wonderful sight!!
He shook his courageous body and then,
Headed home, to the woods once again!
A little wiser, about humans who care,
When the situation seems so lost and unfair!
It is amazing, when creatures so "dumb",
Give lessons about life....at least to some!
If hunters had seen him, roaming happy and free,
They wouldn't hesitate to shoot him, you see!
But, in a crunch....when life is a nightmare,
These same hunters will prove, that they care!
Human behaviour is a complicated mix,
Destroying sometimes....then working to "fix"!
Compassion, hate, violence, love...all joined together,
Perhaps it depends, on the moon or the weather!
But, when I see such heroic action,
It gives me great joy and such satisfaction!
There's hope for all, if we try to be,
More like these HEROES....who set a moose FREE!

I am a lover of all animals....a "bleeding heart"....but, I do not decide
what others should do about the creatures, who share this planet with
us. I
am not in charge of the Universe....at least not yet! Hopefully, I
never
will be, because my ideas about nature and human behaviour would definitely
collide with the ambitions of others.
When I first began teaching in the north....about two hundred miles,
north
of Lake Superior, in a place called Nakina, I had my first glimpse,
at
bears in the wild and moose, who came down to the lake, wading
out into
the water, to get away from the black flies.
The bears would collect at the town's garbage dump, in the evening and
we
would drive there, to get a "bird's eye view" of these magnificent
wild
creatures, who were doing their best, to survive in a world, where
humans
have more clout ......and guns....It was a sight, that I shall never
forget.
On one occasion, as we drove down the lonely road, we met a moose, with
her
twin calves. It gave me such a thrill and I was sorry, that I had not
brought my camera with me. When I heard the story on T.V., about the
moose
rescue, it brought back such lovely memories, of my first real encounters,
with life in the wild.
