Night Visitor
He saw my light, at two tonight,
Such a screech! Is there a fight?
I put down my pen and looked around,
And saw fresh tracks, on the snowy ground!
He seemed to feel, that I would come,
This little raccoon is not so dumb!
Peeking at me! Watching me write!
On this cold and frosty night!
So hungry and all alone out there!!
And me inside, with food to spare,
I hurry, to put food outside,
Now I return ~ thoughts of him aside!
Back to "my" warm and cozy "nest",
To write awhile and then to rest,
I'm more content, now that I know,
He's not starving ~ out there, in the snow!!
I treasure this visitor, who comes to my home,
He needs me! I'm not alone!
Other animals will visit, too,
When it is necessary that they do,
Winter draws us close ~ together,
Survival! Through the long, cruel weather!
