I've hung up my skates and am trying to do,
Other things that won't make me so "black and blue"!
At my age, I guess it is time to quit now!
I'll miss all of this, but I can't see how,
I can continue after such a bad fall!
Sore knee and sore back~not good at all!
I'll just recall all the times I did skate,
From the age of five, I was often quite late!
Not getting home in time displeased my father,
Having to stop skating was just such a bother!
My parents didn't know, that we went to the bay,
Skated from town to town on many a day!
The ice was thick and the wind was strong!
We didn't think anything could go wrong!!
We'd wear warm sweaters and make a sail,
We knew that our idea just would not fail!
By opening coats and holding them out,
It was such fun! We'd laugh and shout!
The wind would blow us across the ice,
We felt like "sailboats"~it felt so nice!
This was a dangerous thing to do!
We could have gone through the ice~it's true!
Children take risks, because they don't know,
Even if they did~they'd still want to go!
Adults must be aware~teach and show,
I'm grateful that we always got safely home,
Otherwise, I'd never be writing this poem!
