Wat'chee
Wat'chee, in Cree, means "a hill covered with trees"
The natives once
had unlimited space....were so free!
But, settlers came....settled on Aboriginal land,
All was according, to the White Man's plan!
They restricted access, to traditional hunting grounds,
Around the Red River, disrespect knew no bounds,
Great attempts...to change all native traditions,
Took native children from homes....so many conditions!
From Labrador, to the far reaches of B.C.
Southern borders...to the Arctic....no natives were free!
Their rights were disregarded, in every way,
Now, some educated natives say, that Canada must pay!
Once again, pushed to the point of desperation,
Snails pace of land claims....in Government negotiations!
Regarding environmental issures, Aboriginals are trying!
They are concerned, about all low-level flying!
Feel that they must take matters, into their own hands,
Wheels of Government move too slowly, to deal with demands!
Too long, they've been patient........so much neglect!
They must retain their own culture and deserve respect!
Wat'chee Lodge, an Aboriginal centre, gives hospitality,
Adjacent to Wapusk National Park, where you can see,
North America's largest, outdoor, Polar Bear Zoo,
There you will find many interesting things to do!
Forty miles south of Churchill, with a commanding view,
Of Hudson Bay lowlands, of interest to you!
Dotted with stands, of spruce, tundra hummocks
and willow-lined creeks......
You could be fascinated, for weeks and weeks!
Cape Churchill Caribou, wolf and white fox are all there,
Adventurers and Nature Photographers....do take care!!
If you are fortunate, some wonderful pictures you'll get,
It will be a unique experience....one you'll never forget!
