THE WEDDING DRESS

Just nineteen....going to be married soon!
Not expecting a new dress, banquet or honeymoon!
Times were hard....there just was no money,
I'd wear my Sunday frock and hoped it would be sunny!
But, my father loved me and although we were so poor,
He stated, that I'd have a new, white dress...for sure!!
He took his beloved encyclopedia and golf clubs...the whole set!!
They had cost a fortune...but, he would try to get,
A small sum, from the second hand place!
That man would do anything, to put a smile, on his dear, daughter's face!
For both of these, he got just four dollars, that day!
But, it was just enough and now he could pay,
For some lovely, white fabric and pretty flowers, too,
He felt, that this was what good dads needed to do!
My Mom and I cut and sewed the pieces together,
On my wedding day....oh!....such stormy weather!!
But, when I floated down the church aisle,
To receive my wedding band.....
My Dad's loving eyes made me feel, just so grand!
That dress was the best dress, that I've ever had,
A special "Gift of Love"....from my dear Mom and Dad.
