April 9,.....1898. Northfield News An Old Soldier Dead
Henry Morton Sumbered in the Ranks of the Departed

Considerable surprise was occasioned Thursday morning by the sad announcment that Henry Morton had passed away during the night, death having come without warning, the immediate cause being heart failure. Funeral ceremonies will be held at 1:30 this afternoon, Rev. J. E. McConnell officiating, and interment wiil be in the Northfield cemetery. The obsequies will be in charge of Heywood Post, G. A. R., of which the deceased was a member.
Mr. Morton was born in Devonshire, England. August 17, 1838. Coming to this country 1846 he lived in Albion, Wisconson, until the civil war broke out when he enlisted in Co. B, 23d regiment. Wisconson Volunteer Infantry. He served until 1864 when he was wounded in the battle necessitaing the amputation of his leg and receiving discharge. The next year he came to this city where he has dince resided. He has undergone much suffering from his wound but has borne it patiently until death thus released him.

A Former Northfield Boy Meets Death Near Spokane.

From meager details of an incident at Cascade tunnel in Washington it was learned last week that David F. Baker, formerly of this city, was killed on Christmas Day. Deceased was a conductor on the Northern Pacific road and was, it is supposed, in charge of his train when the accident occurred.
Mr. Baker was well and favorably known in railway circles as well as in this vincinity having been up to a few years ago employed on the I. & M. division of the Milwaukee road running between Austin and Minneapolis.
Frank Baker departed Saturday of last week for Spokane a short distance from the scene of the accident and will bring the remains of his brother to this city for burial. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Methodist church.
