Greetings Parents and Friends:
For those of you who are new to the Gahanna-Jefferson School District, we would like to welcome you. The Gahanna Black Parents Association was created over 17 years ago. The purpose of the association is to take an active role on issues for the benefit of the entire Gahanna community. this is to be accomplished by improving communications between students, school administration, teachers, and parents.
We are very excited about the plans the executive committee has put together for the Gahanna Black Parents Association this year. We identified three key areas on which to focus. They are membership, parental liaisons, and commitment.
We are planning an aggressive membership drive this year. We feel that for an organization to be taken seriously it must have the support of their constituents. If we are to be the voice of the black community on school issues it is vital that we be able to demonstrate that we truly represent the black community. One essential way to do this is to have a large paid membership. We have more than 500 black families in this community. The GBPA has set a goal of 225 paid members for the 2003-2004 school year. The dues are $15.00 per family.
We want to increase our visibility in the community. We plan to do this by increasing our involvement in each school's PTO; by attending various civic meetings; and by participating on boards and committees. We need parents to act as liaisons in other schools. We are also in need of parents to attend school board meeting, city council meetings and to become involved with the high school athletic booster club.
Lastly, our focus is on commitment. First, we ask you to support the organization financially by paying your membership dues. Next, we ask that each of you examine your schedule and commit to becoming involved with one of our standing committees. They are parental involvement; membership and publicity; Kwanza celebration; Black History Month Celebration; and Senior recognition. Any time you can give will be beneficial. Everything we do is to insure our children have fair opportunities.
We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.
