What would you do if you found out that Bill Gates and his
wife Melinda have just donated $1 Billion(!) dollars to higher education for minorities across the country starting in 2000. It is predicted by some that it will increase the amount of African-American college graduates by 10 percent and African-American post grads by 35 percent. This is being hailed as the largest gift to education ever in the US and probably in the world.
"The greatest thing you can do is provide somebody a wonderful education, and you'd like to do that in a way that they can really focus on their studies,'' Gates said. "Education is something that Melinda and I believe in very deeply.''
The scholarship program, which has a Web site, www.gmsp.org, is open to low-income high school seniors with a minimum 3.3 grade-point average who are nominated by teachers or
administrators.
