SCHOOL DAYS |
The typical school day began at 8:00 O’clock
and was divided into four periods. Morning
classes were divided by a morning recess. The noon lunch time was
an hour which allowed for a
play period. Then the afternoon periods were also di-
vided by an afternoon recess. The call to the classroom was with a hand bell which the teacher would ring out of the front door. In good weather the stu- dents would line up in front of the door in two rows in seating order. Then quietly march in to our desks and be seated on the folding seat of our school desk. The desks with folding seats were bolted to the floor in four rows. In order to enter or exit from a desk a student had to raise up a folding seat which would always cause a loud slamming noise. Anyone on the outside of the building could always tell when classes were changing inside the building by the noise of a loud rash of desks slammings. |
THE RECITAL BENCH |
The students from each class were required
to come to the front of the school-
room and be seated on a Recital Bench in front of the teacher’s desk. The teacher was seated in a swivel chair behind his desk and then classes were conducted one at a time from that old Recital Bench. When the allotted time for one class was up, the next class would come forward for their class period. |
THE BLACKBOARD |
A large slate blackboard was mounted on
the wall across the front of the schoolroom. On
that old blackboard we learned to add, subtract, multiply,
and divide and we needed no calculator or computer to do so. We also learned to spell and write our ABC’s. We learned penmanship and sentences. That old blackboard was very revealing of our learning process - especially with the teacher looking over our shoulders. |
