THE ENDING |
The Shelby/Skull Creek consolidation was
short lived. The formation of the West End Rural High School
combined all the schools in the West End of Aus-
tin County into one school located at Industry. So when the 1944 School Term ended, the Skull Creek School house doors were closed for good. |
In 1945, the local school board put the
building up for sale. Mr. R. J. Jaeger
of Warrenton, Texas bought the building, tore it down and moved the lumber to his farm. The land ownership was returned to the Fiesler family descendants who originally donated the school site. The Fiesler family sold the plot to Mr. Walter Eixmann. After owning it for several years, Mr. Eixmann sold the plot of land to Mr. Bennie Stamann who is the present owner. |
The peak enrollment was reached in the
year of 1930. In that year, the enroll-
ment reached 45 students. To facilitate that many in the classroom, a cloak- room was added to the front of the main building. The cloakroom was used to store lunches on a shelf built all around the room, and underneath the shelf was a place for each student to hang his coat and cap. Also, the water cooler with the drinking cups was moved to the cloakroom. This allowed for addition- al desks in the main classroom. The enrollment remained fairly even during the 1930’s until the year 1941, and then it declined and finally closed in 1944. |
So ends the story of a worthy little community
institution. In this the Texas
Sesquicentennial year, we take time to remember our proud heritage. A plaque marking the plot where the Skull Creek School stood has been dedicated to it’s memory. |
