GERMAN HERITAGE |
It might well be said that the Skull Creek
Community was a solid German Set-
tlement in every sense of the word. All customs and traditions of the German Heritage were followed and observed including the German language which was the predominant language of the community for many years. |
Church services were
in the German language with the use of German Bibles and
Hymn Books. Singing
groups sang in German language and were known
as Mannerchors. Weddings were usually very lavish events that were soon not to be forgotten and included such customs as the noisy KatzenMuzik. |
The center of entertainment was
Die Halle (dance hall) for good time dancing
and visiting. The first Agricultural Society
in Shelby, organized by Johann Fiesler, built a
hall which was the forerunner of
the present day Harmonie Hall, which is still the center
of entertainment today. The
strong influence
of these early German Settlers still lingers in the descendants today, many of whom still speak the German language. |
