How to Become A Christian

You do not become a Christian by anything that you do or say.
You do not become a Christian by being good, polite, or sincere.
You do not become a Christian by going to church.

So just how do you become a Christian? Being a Christian is a decision that each of us must willfully make.

A person can read or even memorize the entire Bible, he can pray and go to church every Sunday and even give money to support the church -- but he cannot make himself a Christian without the help of Jesus Christ. Many seem to think that there is some sort of code or set of rules that must be followed that will make us a Christian. Many believe that if our good out weighs our bad we will go to heaven. Becoming a Christian is not about being a good person, but about allowing God to make you into something good.

If you want to become a Christian, you must accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. You must ask Him to forgive you of your sins and come into your heart.

Although there are no set steps or rules to becoming a Christian - Christ outlined in the Bible what you need to know and do in order to accept Him:

a.) You must recognize that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins.

"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
(Romans 3:23)
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

God provided a way to forgive us of our sins. He sent His son in the likeness of man to die upon the cross and wash us clean of our sins.

b.) You must repent your sins.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

c.) You must believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He is the only way to the Father.

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. "
(John 3:16-17)

"I am the way, the truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father but by Me." (John 14:6)

d.) You must confess Jesus Christ before men.

"If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10)

e.) You must accept Christ and ask Him into your heart.

"For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:13)

"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9)

How do I accept Christ and ask Him into my heart?

It is not automatic and you were not born with it. It is a decision that you must make. It is available for everyone who asks. It is as simple as a prayer. But remember that the prayer is not what saves you, it is the faith in your heart when you say the prayer that saves you.

Do you want to receive the most precious gift of all - the Lord Jesus Christ? Then simply but sincerely pray something like this:

"Dear Lord Jesus, I believe that You were sent to die on the cross for my sins. Lord Jesus, please forgive me of my sins. Thank you for Your forgiveness. I am asking You into my heart and my life as my personal Savior. Help me to follow and obey You in my life.
In Your precious name, Amen."

If you prayed a similar prayer in sincerity, God has accepted you into his kingdom of eternal life. Praise God! Continue to pray and read your Bible. Seek out a church family. God will help you - just ask.

"I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies." (John 11:25)
