Salem is the capitol of the State of Oregon. It is located in the fertile Willamette Valley between Portland and Eugene. The population is about 130,000. Vineyards and wineries adorn the hillsides surrounding the city. There are also abundant fruit, flower and vegetable farms. Iris and tulip fields attract visitors in the spring. Other popular attractions just a short distance away are Silver Falls State Park, the Oregon coast and ski resorts. The climate is moderate but it rains a lot in the winter months. It is not unusual for roses to still be blooming at the beginning of December.
