OTHER PICTURES OF HIM:
JOHN & PROBABLY MAGGIE SOUTHERLAND
JOHN AND MARY HENSON...ONLY KNOWN PICTURE OF HER
This is John and his sons. Not sure WHICH sons yet.
This page has info and links, but this is the Familytreemaker file on him:
HERE IS A TALE TOLD TO TURNBO BY JOHN ABOUT HIS ARMY DAYS IN THE CIVIL WAR
PARENTS: Hiram, Sr. and Nancy Jane TABOR-BIAS
Born 11-7-1841 or 1844? in Taney Co., MO (Per Turnbo's Tales of the Ozarks as told to him by GGF John, he "saw the first light of day" on Bee Branch)
Other accounts show him born in Carroll Co., AR or in MO, but it is my belief that he was born in Taney Co., MO as Turnbo reports. I understand that Carroll Co., AR may have been a part of MO as we know it now. This MAY be why there is confusion about this.
Died 9-28-1937. I have a picture of his tombstone in the Ft. Smith National Cemetery, Ft. Smith, AR
Click below to see a copy of his military burial info. from the national cemetery.
MILITARY: Served in the Union Army, Company B, 16th MO Calvary from 1-1-1863 to 7-1-1865.
An interesting story told to me by a relative is of how John became a northern soldier instead of southern as he should have been and would rather have been is:
John was approached by some raiders in Civil War days. They found out he was not fighting for EITHER side at the time and was about to hang him. They had the rope around his neck when one of the raiders begged for his life. The raider asked if John would join the Army would the others spare his life. They agreed and John joined the first unit that he came upon....the northerners.
John was in a POW camp (possibly Andersonville) and was given bacon to eat. It had maggets all over it and John slung the maggets off, sliced it up and fried it. He said, "It sure tasted good because we were hungry!"
John was a doctor in the Civil War. His byword was "Gosh damn". Someone once asked him what kind of doctor he was and he said, "A Gosh damn good one."
I HAVE THIS PICTURE IN A FRAME AT HOME ABOUT A 16 BY 20...IT'S JOHN AT AGE 20 IN THE SERVICE. A HANDWRITTEN NOTE SAYS IT IS HIM IN HIS CIVIL WAR UNIFORM.
LAND RECORDS: Marion Co., AR land records show he owned (homesteaded) 160 acres on the Marion Co., AR and Ozark Co., MO state line. I always thought this is the 160 acres we call "the old homeplace at the end of "P" Highway, Dugginsville, MO. The road ends at Bull Shoals Lake and that is where the land was located if it's the old homeplace but Mom said Grandpa told her GGF John also owned land near the Taney/Ozark county line near Ocie, MO. Mom and I found the land where an old house had been up on a hill where she said Grandpa told her was his dad's.
Application for Disability pension papers report the following statement made by John:
My name is John BIAS. I am the identical John BIAS of Company B, 10 MO Calvary and I reside at Roland, OK. In January 1924 I broke down and was confined to bed for two months. I was then living in Sulphur Springs Addition, Ft. Smith, AR, and was attended by a city physician, Dr. J.S. Parks, whose address I do not know as he has moved away from Ft. Smith. My trouble is from blindness, heart trouble, and rheumatism and I need a constant attendant. I have been advised also that I have high blood pressure and I can be around about the house but it is not safe for me to be alone and it has been necessary for my wife, Margret BIAS, to care for me since January 1924, and at the present time, it is necessary for her to assist me in dressing and undressing. I also take spells of deafness and can scarcely hear at times."
Mayme Bias-Thornell siad John lived with Ava, daughter of Gideon, until he died. Unknown when he moved in with her.
MARRIAGES:
1. Julie Ann NESBIT (Pronounced "Neasby"), born 2-15-1845, died 12-5-1878 (I have not verified this death date) in Webster Co., MO. Conflicting info show her having died 9-10-1937 in Dugginsville, MO. I will continue researching this.)
They were married 9-10-1865 in Webster Co., MO. Webster County Recorder's office verfied this information.
I have a couple of new things about Julie Nesbit,
1. Alexis and Bobbie found a census with her and her parents showing the name spelled NESBIT.
2. Per a story told from close family members who knew John well he told a story about Julie's dad coming to visit.
John said when he walked into the house and saw her father, John picked up the baby (Armstrong), put him on the horse with him and left and never returned.
Julie's dad was black.
Bobbie had found a census where Julie was shown as MU (mulato) so I had a feeling this was true.
Here's the census record Bobbie found and a few of her notes:
¸1850 Marion Co. AR 29 Oct page 624
#104 Little North Fork Twp
Francis Nesbit 37 NC mu
Sarah 23 AR mu
Juliann 4 AR mu married John Armstrong Bias
Absalom 2 AR mu
Paralee 1 AR mu
Rachel Turner 2 AR mu
In this township there were 13 families all mulattos who lived next door to each other.
Both of Julianne's parents were also mulattos not blacks and they were classified like the Indians.
It is possible that the story may NOT be true as it came thru the generations, but with the census record showing them as mulatto it seems it may be true.
Alexis and I have been comparing notes and have come up with the THEORY ONLY that this may be what happened:
There was an epidemic of somethng going around about then as three children died very young. Julie may have gotten the disease, Sarah Elizabeth may have been sent to relatives because Julie could no longer care for her. As Julie got sicker her father may have come to see about her. When John saw he was black he may have taken Armstrong and left for her family to care for her until she died. Let me know what you think about this theory.
Because of censuses found we know Sarah and Armstrong was with John and Mary so it is assumed this happened ABOUT 1878 as John and Mary married that year.
1870 Ozark Co., MO census shows:
John BYES age 25, b. MO,
Julia Ann, b. AR,
Sarah Elizabeth 3, b. MO,
Armstrong 1. b. MO.
1870 Washington Co, Elm Springs, AR census shows:
John BIAS 27 b. MO,
Mary (HENSON?) 28, b. MO.
This MAY be another John Bias, son of Jesse Bias and Jane but not sure.
ANOTHER marriage license exists for John Bias and Louisa Risley dated May 1866. They were married in a double wedding with his sister Matilda Bias and Silas Risley. HOWEVER.....Eleanor Bias, widow of Jesse Sterling Bias (Hiram, Jr.'s grandson) has interviewed MANY of the descendants of this line and stories from people who were aware of all of this says the name on this marriage license HAS TO BE WRONG as they know Jefferson and Matilda were the ones who had a double wedding AT THE HOME OF JOHN BIAS so it's certainly possible the name could have been entered incorrectly. There has been confusion this for a long time so I am hoping this clears all this up.
Another bit of info proving it was Jefferson and not John is that a Risley descendant from Jefferson and Louisa Risley's line were at a Risley estate in another state and found a document stating that "Louisa Risley is no longer considered a part of the family because she married an INDIAN, Jefferson Bias". Unfortunately, that person wasn't able to get a copy of that document.
In Jefferson's pension records a document from Mr. Sallee that married Jefferson and Louisa and Silas Risley and Matilda Bias on the same date at John's house noted that the name John Bias instead of Jefferson Bias was entered on the marriage license with Louisa Risley so this seems exact proof that the notation above is true.
I will have to check again about the dates of these censuses since they both show the same year. It is possible the second one is not our John.
1885 MO census shows John BIAS living in Jasper township.
1886 Jasper Township info shows he is no longer listed so he moved from Jasper Twp.in 1885.
John and Julie Anne's children were:
1. Sarah Elizabeth, born 9-30-1866 in Ozark Co., MO, died 11-26-1882
2. Armstrong, born 6-11-1869 in Skullyville, Haskell Co., OK, Indian Territory, died 9-29-1945 in Los Angeles, CA, married Tennessee Lorina EARLY in 1892. Married Rosa Lee STEPP 2-24-1906 in Campbell, OK Territory. She was born 3-10-1889 in Nolden, Lawrence Co., AL, d. 2-1-1927 in Sallisaw, OK of gall bladder problems. She was the daughter of ____ and Martha CALDWELL-STEPP.
3. F.M., born 9-4-1871, died 8-18-1875
4. Nancy Jane, born, 9-5-1872 in Ozark Co., MO, died 7 or 8-5-1875.
5. George W., born 11-27-1873 Ozark Co., MO, died 2-15-1875
6. Matilda Ann, b. 3-6-1875 in Ozark Co., MO, d. 12-10-1882.
Marriage #3:
Mary HENSON (my g-grandmother) 7-30-1878 in Ozark Co., MO.
HERE IS A MILITARY REQUEST FORM FOR WHO WE THINK IS MARY'S BROTHER, JOSEPH HENSON
She was born 9-15-1861, d. 11-2-1907 in Checotah, McIntosh Co., OK.
She may have been the daughter of Nancy and _______ HENSON.
I found in the 1870 Ozark Co., MO census:
Nancy Henson, 29, b. TN
Mary S. Henson, 8, b. 1861 (age 8 then)
William M. Henson, 8 months, b. MO
No father was shown so Nancy probably was widowed before 1870.
CHILDREN WITH MARY:
1. Jesse Gideon, b. 9-17-1879, d. 8-17-1880 (probably in unmarked grave, Hart Cemetery, Ozark Co., MO).
2. Birtha Bell, b. 11-8-1881, d. 10-18-1883 (unmarked grave).
3. William Hirim, b. 1-1-1884 in Dugginsville, MO, d. 5-22 or 27-1970 in Banning, CA, m. Bertha Jewel GRIFFITH, b. 8-10-1896 Durham, Washington Co., AR, d. 1-4-1980 in Catoosa, Rogers, OK, daughter of David GRIFFITH and Mary Winnie QUALLS. Also married Ann RIGNEY.
4. John Alogan (my grandfather), b. 10-26-1882, d. 11-10-1969 at his home in Dugginsville, MO (I was there and I recently got paperwork from the funeral home in Gainesville, MO). Some records incorrectly show him dying in Branson, MO. He married Amie Malinda FRIEND 4-12-1907 (I have license). She was born 4-6-1889 in Peel, AR, died 2-10-1959 (I have obituary)
5. Macager, b. 8-3-1893, d. 6-6-1894. (Another unmarked grave?)
6. Don Mose (called him MOSE), b. 6-3-1899, d. 3-75 in Lakewood, CA, m. Juletta GARNER 2-5-1921 in Ft. Smith, AR. She was born 11-29-1889, d. 4-1985. They had no children, but Juletta had been married previously to _____ TANKERSLEY and she had children. These names and info. were found in the family bible of John BIAS, my grandfather:
1. Betty Jo TANKERSLEY, b. 10-6-1928
2. Anita Jean TANKERSLEY, b. 3-14-1931
3. Wanda Ruth TANKERSLEY, b. 2-14-1934
4. Glenda Lor TANKERSLEY b. 4-20-1936
Mose was found on an AR census, but I will have to locate it again. I will input it ASAP.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Then John married Maggie SUTHERLAND (not sure of spelling) 8-20-1908 in Taney Co., MO. She was born 1857 in Union Co., AR. I saw the marriage license and it showed she was 51 and he was 64. They were only married a year so apparently were no children. I am told she was a "Mail Order Bride" from Flippin, AR. Since I live 7 miles from there, I will TRY to find out more when I get a chance.
Some info lists a Maggie BYARS, b. 12-5-1856, d. 5-19-1932. Could this be the same person?

THIS IS A PICTURE OF JOHN AND "ONE"OF THE MARGARETS...NOT SURE WHICH ONE, BUT THINK IT'S MAGGIE SOUTHERLAND.
Then John married Margaret COOKSEY 7-1910 or 12. She was born 10-10-1892 in Chicago, Cook Co., IL, died 7-4-1966 in Mendicino Co., CA and buried at Ft. Bragg. Her parents were Benjamin and Elizabeth (FULLER) COOKSEY. I am in email with Courtney "Corky" York about this line. He is Rosa Pauline's son. See below.
Here is an email from Corky York, GGF John and Margaret's grandson, telling who is in the above pictre:
"This is a picture of Margaret Cooksey and John Bias. The younger with the very blond hair is my mother, Rosa Pauline Bias (York). The oldest child of John and Margaret. The other Child is Dollie (Dolly) Bias (Downing). She married William Oscar York, brother to Jacob Asury York, who married my mother Rosa. As I remember the picture would dated about 1916."
CHILDREN WITH MARGARET: He was 66 or 68....WHAT GUY!!!!!!....:-) Corky said someone asked him once if he had help with these kids with Margaret Cooksey and he took out after him in anger.
1. Dolia Ethel, b. 11-25-1925 in Vian, Sequoah Co., OK. Married Oscar William YORK 3-5-1927. She was born to Margaret before they were married. More info soon.

HERE'S ROSA AND JACOB "JAKE" YORK
This line is also part of SERGEANT ALVIN C. YORK's line. Go to:
http://voyager.rtd.utk.edu/volweb/Schools/York/diary.html and read Sergeant York's DIARY. Geocities won't let me link this page so you can just click on it so cut and paste or write the above address into your computer. It is 35 typed pages. Really interesting!!
3. Don Albert Weston, b. 3-17-1918 in Ft.Smith, AR, d. 9-7-1918.
4. Leola E, (called Margaret) b. 1-14-1920 in Ft. Smith, AR, d. 1964. Married Frank NEWTON, b. 1903-1923, d. 1964.

7. Macager Cash, b. 11-30-1926 in Roland, Sequoah Co., OK. Married Ann OWENS. I am in email contact with one of his descendants as well.
JOHN WAS SAID TO HAVE BEEN MARRIED 5 OR 6 TIMES, BUT SO FAR, THESE ARE THE ONLY RECORDS FOUND. Margaret COOKSEY would have been his last wife because of his physical description in his disability paperwork referenced above.
