My Diary - Book 1: The First Six Months
(January 5th-July 5th)

Monday, January 5 (my birthday): I distinctly remember hearing people say "Don't you want to come out and meet everybody, Roo?" They just would not leave me alone! Something about Christmas and then about a tax break. But, I ignored them and decided not to check out from what had been a comfortable place until I was ready. Actually, I started my way out the door the evening of January 4th but the hallway was a little longer than I expected. I had serious second thoughts at the end and did not like the cold feeling I felt on the top of my head after this long, uncomfortable trip. Nobody told me that I couldn't go back, though. After hearing something about a vacuum, I decided to hurry it up and I finally arrived 3:50pm on January 5th at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital. I weighed 7 lbs. 5 oz. and was 20 inches long. I had a terrible headache, but I got to meet my Daddy and Mommy, so that was pretty cool.

Tuesday, January 6 (one day): Today, I met my Grandma Jen and my Aunt Sara. They kept telling me how beautiful I was! If I'd known people were going to compliment me so much, I would have arrived sooner.

Wednesday, January 7 (two days): I came home from the hospital today. I'm not sure how we got here, though. I was sleeping soundly and when I woke up, here I was! My Grandma Jen is here and she's held me and sung to me a lot. I could get used to this!

Thursday, January 8 (three days): I met my neighbors today, a little girl named Jennifer and her parents. I was pretty sleepy, but I sneaked a few peeks at them.

Friday, January 9 (four days): My parents took me somewhere where some guy poked and prodded at me. They said he was my pediatrician. All I know was that he was very happy I had gained all my birth weight back, and said I was eating well. I like to be good at things, so I guess I'll concentrate on becoming an expert eater.

Saturday, January 10 (five days): I met LOTS of people today -- my Grandma Ryan, my Great-Aunt Jeannie, my Uncle Josh, and Aunt Sara again. My Daddy wanted to show my Uncle Josh how to change my diaper. I thought I'd give them a special treat, so I peed in an arc into the sink as soon as Uncle Josh took off my diaper. That made everyone jump!

Sunday, January 11 (six days): I met more relatives today, my Mom's cousin Jennifer and her husband Kevin, and my Mom's cousin Laura. They brought me lots of presents too. It's so much fun getting presents, being held, and being complimented.

Saturday, January 17 (one week, five days): My Grandma Jen left today. I'm sad because no one sings me Chinese nursery rhymes anymore.

Saturday, January 24 (two weeks, six days): My Mommy and Daddy took me to a restaurant today. Or so they claim. I just slept through the whole trip.

Wednesday, January 28 (three weeks, two days): My Grandma Ryan came to stay at our house today for a few days. She held me and sang to me a lot. Grandmas are the greatest!

Friday, February 6 (one month, one day): We went to see that guy who pokes me again. I now weigh 10 lbs. and am 22 inches long, 90th percentile in height and weight! Wow, I really am an expert eater!

Saturday, February 7 (four weeks, five days): I had my first bottle of formula today. My Daddy gave me the food instead of my Mommy. I don't know what everyone was making such a big deal about -- I'm such a good eater, I will eat anything from anyone!

Sunday, February 8 (four weeks, six days): I went to my first party today. My Mommy's friend Heather had a housewarming party. I got all dressed up in my party dress, and showed off to lots of people from my Mommy's old workplace.

Sunday, February 15 (five weeks, six days): Today, we had a lot of other babies over to our house for my first Class Reunion. My new friends' parents had taken childbirth classes with my parents (Can you believe it? What did they need classes for? I was the one who did all the work!). I was the youngest baby, but I was the biggest. The other babies didn't know how to eat as well, so I showed them my technique -- by minimizing my breathing and avoiding any time to taste, I downed 6 oz. in five minutes!

Thursday, February 19 (six weeks, three days): Well, I got bored with the eating accomplishments (clearly, I am an expert) so I've decided to work on something new -- sleeping! Last night, I slept six hours in a row! This made my Mommy and Daddy very happy in the morning, so I think I'll keep it up!

Friday, March 6 (two months, one day): We went to my doctor's again. I now weigh 12 lbs. 7 oz. and am 22 3/4" long! The doctor praised me for my great eating and sleeping ability and said I was "very well-nourished". I also got three shots from the nurse -- they didn't hurt me too badly, but the nurse must have done something else to my Mommy, because Mommy was very upset about my shots!

Saturday, March 7 (two months, two days): I went to my first birthday party today. Even though it was a surprise party for my Daddy, I was the center of attention! I met my Grandpa Ryan for the first time. Everyone tells me I get my eating proficiency from him. I also met a new friend, 7-month-old Christina.

Monday, March 9 (9 weeks): Today, I started going to school! It was so much fun. All the other babies in my classroom treated me like a princess and I was, of course, the center of attention. My teachers, Miss Lisa and Miss Lynda, said I was an "angel"! There are lots of fun toys and new lights to look at. When I went home at the end of the day, I babbled to my Mommy about my day for a whole hour! I get to go to school every day from now on. Cool!

Sunday, March 15 (9 weeks, six days): I just got back from my first vacation. Daddy and Mommy and I went to Sunday River, Maine to visit their friends Stephanie and Randy. I had so much fun watching my Daddy skiing, sitting by a fireplace watching the fire, scaring their cat, and watching the snow fall. Best of all, I got to go swimming for the first time! It was in a heated pool and it was a lot like taking a bath except I wore a swimsuit and there were a lot of other people in the bath with me. I didn't like it when the snowflakes kept hitting my face, so Daddy kept me indoors most of the time. I don't know how far away Sunday River is from home, since I would just go to sleep and, when I woke up, we'd be somewhere else.

Monday, March 16 (ten weeks): I had my first professional portraits taken today. It was so much work -- I had to sit AND look at the camera AND smile all the same time! And, I wasn't allowed to pull up my dress, either! The photographer wanted to take seven pictures of me, but I only let her take two -- then I got hungry, and I let nothing interfere with my dinner!!

Tuesday, March 24 (eleven weeks, one day): I don't feel well! I got sent home from school today. Mommy had to give me some cherry-flavored medicine (it would have tasted better if it was milk-flavored).

Wednesday, March 25 (eleven weeks, two days): One of my teachers called to see how I was feeling. I feel much better, but awfully sleepy. I stayed home today and slept all day long.

Thursday, March 26 (eleven weeks, three days): Back to normal! I really missed my teachers and friends doting on me, so I went back to school in the afternoon. For dinner, we went out to eat with my Mommy's cousin Jennifer and her husband Kevin. I'm going to have a new second cousin!

Saturday, March 28 (eleven weeks, five days): My first babysitter! Actually, it was my great-aunt Jeannie, who I love to play with. Mommy and Daddy went out to see a play for a few hours. I didn't even notice they were gone.

Friday, April 3 (12 weeks, four days): My teachers told my parents about my boyfriend, Brandon, who I like to flirt with at school. They weren't too happy because they told me I wasn't allowed to date for another 27 3/4 years. Daddy thinks Brandon is trouble because he tries to undress me (he tries to pull my booties off when I'm swinging in the swing, and he pokes at the buttons on my clothes).

Friday, April 10 (13 weeks, four days): I had two "special" pictures taken today (Daddy called them X-rays) at the doctor's office. I just can't seem to shake this cold, so Daddy took me to the doctor and they took the special pictures just to be safe. My chest is clear, though. I TOLD my parents I was feeling fine, my nose is just a little sniffly -- but they are so paranoid!

Saturday, April 11 (13 weeks, five days): My first trip to Grandma and Grandpa Ryan's house in Vermont! I met a dog for the first time -- he didn't say "Ruff ruff" OR "Bow wow wow" like my books say, though.

Easter Sunday, April 12 (13 weeks, six days): I got all dressed up today and I got a basketful of toys and books. Grandma Ryan, my parents and I also went all over town meeting all sorts of my grandparent's friends. Of course, I was on good behavior and everyone told me I was SUCH a good baby. And they told me I was beautiful. But I already knew that.

Monday, April 20 (15 weeks): I slept in my nursery for the first time last night. It's very pretty and there are lots of bright polka dots to look at. I fell asleep at about 9:00 p.m. When I woke up at 5:30, Daddy just gave me my binky and I went back to sleep until 7:30. I'm getting to be an expert sleeper, too!

Wednesday, April 22 (15 weeks, 2 days): I had a special visit to Daddy's office today. Tomorrow is "Take Your Daughter to Work" Day but we like to do things early. I love meeting lots of people and being complimented. Daddy's office is kind of boring, though, so I fell asleep after about an hour.

Thursday, April 23 (15 weeks, 3 days): I slept in my crib for the first time last night. I was really growing out of my bassinette! I like my crib a lot; it's very comfy. Now I always sleep until 7:30 when Daddy wakes me up to get ready for school. I have my breakfast, cuddle with Mommy, get dressed -- then it's off to school I go!

Friday, May 8 (4 months, 3 days): I had my 4-month checkup today. I now weigh 15 lbs. 8 oz. and am 25 3/8" tall! I'm still in the 90th percentile -- I guess it's because I'm such a good eater and sleeper. I had some shots, too, but they weren't too bad. I'm very brave. I barely cried at all.

Sunday, May 10 (4 months, 5 days): I met my Crazy Uncle Gery from Missouri today. He is so funny-looking!!! And he makes faces at me. I just laugh and laugh when I'm with him. But he's only staying for one day. I hope I get to see him again soon.

Tuesday, May 12 (4 months, 1 week): I rolled over from my tummy to my back today. Three times! My parents were so excited. I don't know what the big deal is, though. I hate being put on my tummy, so I try to discourage this behavior in my parents and teachers. They don't learn very well; they keep putting me on my tummy! I have to kick and scream to get them to stop.

Sunday, May 17 (19 weeks, 6 days): Today, we went in to Boston (where my parents used to live before they had me) for a special dinner party. My Mommy's cousin Laura graduated from college today, and there was a special party afterwards for relatives. I met my Great-Aunt Juliana and Great-Uncle David, who live in Hong Kong, which is very far away. I also met Cousin Lillian (actually my Mommy's cousin) and Cousin Ginny (actually my Grandpa Jen's cousin). We went to a fancy restaurant called Jae's Grill, where the chefs cook the meal right at the table! It was fun to watch, but I'm glad I had my bottle with me. I do love my milk!

Sunday, May 24 (20 weeks, 6 days): My Christening Day! It was just wonderful. There was a brunch celebration at our house beforehand. So many friends and relatives came! I just love being around lots of people. I wanted to make sure the occasion was memorable for everyone, so I planned a special surprise. You see, I didn't poop all day on Friday or Saturday. Then, just as the Christening was about to begin, when everyone was in the church and the Priest was ready -- I let out a BIG and STINKY poop!!! You can bet that sure caught everyone's attention.

Saturday, May 30 (20 weeks, 5 days): I had some rice cereal for the first time today. It wasn't bad! I need to practice swallowing from that spoon thing, though. I like to eat FAST and the spoon is kind of slow.

Tuesday, June 2 (21 weeks, 1 day): Yuck, I have been sick for three days! I feel just awful and my parents can't do anything about it. At least they give me some yum-yum cherry medicine every now and then. I like that. The worst part is that I haven't been able to go to school and I've been stuck at home with my parents -- who are the most BORING people I have met in my entire five months of life!

Thursday, June 4 (21 weeks, 3 days): Finally back at school! I missed my teachers and friends so much. I gave them all huge smiles upon my return today. This evening, my parents gave me rice cereal again. I'm much better with the spoon now, but my parents are SO SLOW and they don't give me my food fast enough!!! They claimed they were shoveling it in as fast as they could, but I kept clamoring for more! I tried to grab the spoon myself, but they wouldn't let me have it. The nerve of them!

Friday, June 12 (5 months, 1 week): We went out for dinner to a restaurant today and my parents brought my cereal along. I discovered a neat trick -- when sitting in the restaurant's high chair, I could rest my chin on the dinner table. That way, I could eat my cereal without even expending any energy to lift my head! My parents said that it wasn't very good manners, but they just don't understand!

Saturday, June 20 (23 weeks, 6 days): We had a graduation party at my house today! My classmates, Brandon, Carrie, and Daron, came -- so did my teachers, Miss Lisa and Miss Lynda. Five of my six classmates will graduate from our Infant classroom to a Toddler classroom next week. It was so much fun to have everyone over! I shared all my toys. Who wants to play with toys anyway when there are so many fun people to talk to? In the evening, I had peas for dinner. My parents seemed to think it was a big deal, but I didn't. My eating technique is to swallow as fast as I possibly can, so I don't even taste what's going down. So I didn't even notice the difference between peas and my rice cereal!

Sunday, June 21 (23 weeks, 6 days): Did I mention that I can sit up by myself now? I've been practicing all week and have gotten really good at it. It's much better being able to see all around me.

Tuesday, June 23 (24 weeks, 1 day): I ate squash today. As with all food, I found it to be quite yummy and wanted to eat more.

Sunday, June 28 (24 weeks, 6 days): Dad and Mom seem pretty uptight. They were packing up lots of my stuff today and put it in Great-Aunt Jeannie's car this evening. She came to visit me for most of the afternoon while Dad and Mom went out with their friends from Chicago who came to visit, "Auntie" Katrina and "Uncle" Jim.

Monday, June 29 (25 weeks): What a day! Mom and Dad woke me up early to eat and then whisked me into Great-Aunt Jeannie's car. My special seat was in her car (I can tell it is mine from the way the straps taste). With my full tummy, I went back to sleep. Next thing I know, I am with Nanna and Great-Aunt Jeannie and I'm starving! Mom and Dad are nowhere to be seen. I am at this cabin on a nice lake. Something must be wrong with the ground since I am not allowed to touch it -- Nanna and Great-Aunt Jeannie hold me all the time. During the evening, I found Mommy and Daddy. They are in this little box -- I could not see them but I could hear them. The box (I think they called it a telephone) did not taste good.

Tuesday, June 30 (25 weeks, 1 day): Hey, I touched the ground today. I also got to swing a lot. I even slept in the swing. I like watching these bugs fly all around. Also, I like to watch Nanna's dog, Sabie. Mommy and Daddy are still someplace called New Hampshire, which apparently is somewhere in the telephone.

Wednesday, July 1 (25 weeks, 2 days): Mom and Dad came to see me. They went back into the telephone for the night though, to someplace called Stowe, Vermont.

Thursday, July 2 (25 weeks, 3 days): More and more people keep coming to the cabin. Mom and Dad returned also. They gave me sweet potatoes for the first time, which are delicious! I really liked those and they wouldn't give me enough! I spent the night with my parents in a hotel room not very far from the cabin. There are no bugs to look at, but the curtains are very interesting.

Friday, July 3 (25 weeks, 4 days): We went with Mom and Dad's friend Katrina to a big museum today. We went in lots of buildings and into a big boat that was on land. I saw some relatively uninteresting paintings of people and mountains, but there were some GREAT paintings of FOOD! I really liked those! Mommy called them "still lifes" but I know they were really apples and grapes and other fruits. Lots of people were at the cabin today -- they were all very smart because they thought I was adorable in my red, white, and blue outfit and everyone wanted to hold and play with me. In the evening, I saw some pretty colors in the sky!

Saturday, July 4 (25 weeks, 5 days): I wore more red, white and blue today. Lots of other people must have thought I looked great yesterday since they were wearing the same colors.

Sunday, July 5 (25 weeks, 6 days): Hey, I am six months old today. I played with lots of people this morning. I tried to take a little nap but more people wanted to play with me. Finally, Mom and Dad put me in the car so I could sleep. A few minutes after I woke up, we were in our garage!
