KELLEY/KELLY:

The name O'Ceallaigh, (O'Kelly, Kelly, Kelley, Kellie etc.) is the second most popular surname in Ireland today.  Up until the tenth century surnames were not used in Ireland.  They were introduced during the reign of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, to accommodate the increasingly difficult Gaelic system of naming a child after their father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc.  Cormac son of Aedh son of Tadhog, etc.

During the tenth century is was decided to introduce family surnames.  These took the form of Ua, later changed to 'O', which denoted 'grandson of' and 'Mac' which denoted 'son of'.  Thus Cormac MacCeallaigh was the son of Ceallaigh and Cormac O'Ceallaigh was the grandson of Ceallaigh.  It was in this fashion that the O'Ceallaigh clann system grew.

The name O'Ceallaigh (O'Kelly and later Kelly etc.) did not spring from a single source but rather emerged independently in a number of regions of Ireland and to a lesser extent in Scotland, the Isle of Man and England.
(Taken from 'The O'Kelly Clans of Ireland 874 AD to 1800 AD)

 WORTMAN:

Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification.  The four primary sources for second names are:  occupation, location, father's name and personal characteristics.  The surname Wortman appears to be characteristic in origin, and is believed to be associated with the Germans, meaning, "one who was worthy or meritorious".  The most prominent variations of Wortman are Wartmann and Wortmans, Wertman, Wertmans and Worttman.
