The Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets' History

The Vanguard B-Corps was formed in 1971 to prepare future members of the internationally aclaimed Vanguard A-Corps. The average age of the guard was only 13. In the process, they have amassed an enviable record of titles, including over 150 awards in parade competitions.

1973 was the first year the B-corps entered field contests.

In 1975, they made their first appearance at the Pacific Procession Show.

Between the years of 1976 and 1981 the B-corps continued to perform locally in parades and continued to develop and promote many of the Corps members into the A-Corps.

In 1987, the B Corps under new director J.W. Koester took a different direction.

In 1988, the corps' name was changed to the "Vanguard Cadets". This change, along with new uniforms, extended travel opportunities and a more focused staff, set new standards of excellence for the corps.

In 1991, the corps made its first appearance at the DCI World Championships in Dallas, Texas, and placed fourth in the Division II finals.

In 1993, the corps again traveled to the DCI World Championships, in Jackson, Mississippi, and placed second in Division II finals. That same year the corps also placed in the elite Top 25 of the DCI "Open" class Quarterfinals. This placement made the Santa Clara Vanguard organization the first ever in DCI history to have two corps in the Top 25.

The 1995 season brings us a new Director - George Brown. George has been with the SCV for many years, from marching to working with the Booster Club, Alumni Association, and as an Instructor. You gotta love his license plate.. it says it all... "HIBRASS".
