Civil War Diary (cont.)

Monday morning, September 5 - 6:00 we just passed Bruinsburg where we landed when we went in the rear of Vicksburg at 8:00. We passed Grand Gulf and at half passed eight Hard Times Landing, at 15 minutes passed eleven we passed Perkins Plantation and at 11:00 passed Jeff Davisis Plantation, at 12 we passed Carthage. We passed Warrington at 3 this p.m. 12 miles below Vicksburg and got to Vicksburg at 10 minutes till 5. We landed and got off the boat while they washed it.

September 6 - We started this morning at 10 past 7:00 and passed the mouth of the Yazoo river at half passed 8:00 and at 9:00 we landed to take on some beef. We passed Milikens Bend at half past one and 5:00 we met a small boat and stopped half and hour, did not find out what for.

September 7 - The Kentucky caught up with us this morning and passed us. She had the division teams aboard. At 12:00 we passed Greenville and at 1:00 we passed Columbia, both places have been burned by our troops because there was so many boats fired into at those places. At half passed four we landed to get some beef.

September 8 - We landed at the mouth of White river at half passed six this morning and went into camp. It rained a little about noon, got a mail tonight, got 2 letters.

September 9 - Today has been very warm, got a mail this morning, I got a book for New York.

September 10 - It has been quite a pleasant day, we got orders to get on the boat at 2:00 and I was detailed to go on guard on the boat. I was on fatigue last night until 1:00, I wrote a letter to Saphrana this forenoon. 7:00 p.m. we are just starting.

September 11 - We came up the river 15 miles last night and stopped till this morning at half past five and arrived here at St. Charles at 4:00 this p.m. and into camp. It’s been a very warm day.

September 12 - We have been at work all day fixing up our tents, I was detailed to fix up a tent for some sick boys and this afternoon I baked some biscuits.

September 13 - The left wing of our regiment, two pieces of artillery and some Calvary went out in the country foraging and got back this afternoon. They got corn and cattle for beef. It rained some this afternoon.

September 14 - This has been a very fine day. I was on fatigue today and wrote a letter this afternoon.

September 15 - We got mail today and I got a letter from Uncle James and from Lucy written August 26th.

September 16 - This has been a very fine day, I am on picket there has been two boats come up today.

September 17 - Weather fine, I’ve not been very well today and had some chickens for supper.

September 18 - There was a man died in Company E last night buried this morning at 11:00. There was several baptized today. This evening there was a meeting and Major Crook related his experience. There was a boat came down from Duvols Bluff today and brought a mail I got one letter. There is also another come up the river just now. I’ve not found out whether there is any mail on it or not, I expect there is rations on it for we were expecting one loaded with rations. We have only one days more rations here now. This has been a very pleasant day not to warm nor too cold.

September 19 - This has been a very pleasant day. I was detailed last night to help unload rations off a boat and this afternoon our company was detailed to work on the breastworks. I baked some biscuits this evening, we drew rations this afternoon.

September 20 - The weather has been fair today, I washed some clothes. This forenoon the company made a brick oven. Today there was a mail came last night and one today. I got some papers last night.

September 21 - Weather fair, I have been on fatigue today. Today there was a forage party went out after corn. There was a boat came down from Duvols Bluff. The foragers brought in alot of beef cattle.

September 22 - Has been a very pleasant day. I went out in the country for lumber this afternoon and tonight I was detailed to cross the river and go after horses and mules. There is 75 of us going and are going to be gone two days.

September 24 - I went out with about 100 other men on a foraging expedition. We started at 5:00 and got on a gun boat and crossed over the river and then we went out in the country about 8 miles and went into camp. Then Captain Voreas took 40 men and went off to get teams. They got 4 mules and a Rebel government wagon then came back to camp. Captain Cregg took 15 men and went out and got a yoke of oxen and a wagon and some sweet potatoes. By the time they got back and got their suppers eat it was bedtime. We had quite a hard shower in the night. This morning we got up at 4:00 and got breakfast, while we were getting it a couple of Rebs fired at one of our boys that was digging potatoes. After breakfast part of us took a team and went off about a mile after potatoes and while we were gone some Rebs fired into the camp they sent a calvaryman out after us and we had to doublequick into camp but it was all over before we got there, then we waited till the calvary came in and then we got ready and come into camp. It was 10:00 when we started and got here at 3 1/2 o’clock. The mail came in yesterday and there was a letter for me when I got here.
