RX for ESCAPE ARTISTS!! ---- ELECTRIC FENCING
This is
an overview of "visible" or livestock type electric fencing used with escape
artist dogs that love to climb or dig. If you want information
about non-visible, underground fencing please use the link at end
of this page. For visible or wire type electric
fences PLEASE use a fence charger that has an intermittent
pulse and ideally a blinking light that shows the charger is working.(note
light and "intermittent output" notation on example above.)
Continuous pulse chargers can kill squirrels.....I know it happen to me.
I had to get the poor squirrel off the fence and it was dead.
Its front paws wrapped around the wire. Chargers are made for small
animals such as goats and for large animals like cattle. I use the
small animal variety. You can buy chargers that plug
in or that runs off batteries. Follow manufacture's instructions
on placement. I always place mine where it will not get wet.
There are several different types of chargers and wire available, check
with your local farm supply store. Wire with colored tape is now
available and this type wire is easier for dogs and humans to see!
If you have children playing in same area, teach them about the electric
fence. Always have a lightning arrestor on the fence wire!
Properly installed electric fences can be useful tools in containing dogs
that love to dig and climb.
You need
to keep the grass and weeds off the fence by mowing, weed eating or using
a weed/grass killer such as "Round Up" under the wire. The fence
can ground out easily, especially with wet grass. With high dry grass,
some fence chargers could possibly cause the grass to catch on fire.
Also, if the bare wire touches metal it will ground out. Always test
the fence with a fence tester on a regular basis-once a week would be ideal.
CHAINLINK FENCES: Insulators are made
to latch onto the fence. Typically they extend enough for wire to
clear standard fence post. For diggers place them low on the
fence. For climbers place them higher on the fence; approximate the
height of the beagle standing on its hind legs and place where chest would
touch fence.
PRIVACY FENCES: The insulators nail onto
the fence at the level of of bottom support board. You need it to
stand out a few inches from the fence for best anti-dig protection. For
a jumper or climbers place the wire about mid-height of the fence.
Below is pictures of my fence, note the small insulator that were too short
to work adequately.
If
you need to run the wire thru other fences, a small
portion of rubber garden hose works great to insulate the bare wire.
