Dirk was a "Landbouwer" (farmer), and he kept cows, like a lot of the Kapteyns did in those days. He moved into the municipality of Zwammerdam in 1844 from Bodegraven. He probably moved there after his marriage to Lijntje because the opportunity was better, and he wanted to rent a farm. Most farmers in that day did not own the land that they farmed.
The whole family moved to Alsmeer in about the year 1863, but I do not have the reason why. Because of the 10 children, they probably needed a larger farm for the growing children, although I do not have the data on how many of the children survived to adulthood.

312. Frederik Willem Hendrik KAPTEYN
Occupation: Tradesman
BIOGRAPHY: AART ELBERTSE K. was a brother of my grandfather, (words written by John Kapteyn, grandson of Boudewijn Daniel Kapteyn)and never married. I met him 1 x time when he was retired in a home for "Oude kolonialen" Soldiers who had served in Indonesie (Nederland East India) From my father I remember being told that "Uncle Bert" was a top student who a few days before his final exam quit the University and immediately enlisted in the Neth. East Indian army. They were called "kolonialen" (word derived from colonies) He became a life long enlisted man, and we visited him about 1935 in the Arnhem retirement home. He also was regarded as the black sheep of the family, because 1. he walked away from the University at Exam time, enlisted 2. men in the Dutch East Indian Army were usually the drunks etc. etc.
