Alice Love Willis (1905 - 1996)

The crocus died
In the last snow storm
Wee bits of blue and gold
How they stirred my heart
Tired of the winter's blast
That beat upon me so.
Now a sweet breath of spring
Has entered by the door
My daffodills are blossoming
Just as they did before.

The Red Bird's Song
Red bird Trilling A glorious

Song

To greet the morn
And view Wak'ning Spring.

You say,
"The mood is fresh
Day's dawned, Spring here Anew.

Shades of Spring
Blue sky! Yellow,

Gay daffodils Nod.

I heard red bird
Trill, sing, Lyric Verse.

Tulips Bright tints of pink
On golden sun, In Spring.

April Moods
I wanted To go out today.
The sun shone briefly
But a cloud came.
It blotted out the sun.
The rain and wind
Lashed all my hopes.
I think I'll stay in
By my hearth for now.
And wait for Spring
Another day.

Kitten on a Cushion
Kitten Asleep,
On a cushion Curled.
She has no dread
For here No harm Safe.
She plays She eats, she sleeps
Relaxed she yawns
No fear.

When I consider how my life is spent

Cold, half blind
Not hearing much
My legs not holding
Hardly breathing
My heart stops beating
I lament
I beat my breast.
I press against
These old age bonds.
Why must I be soooooo old!
Awake my soul
You are not so bad off
Your mind is clear
You know God loves you.
You have people who care
Who bring you flowers (beauty)
Gifts of love (joy)
Or just themselves (friendship)
Awake, rejoice
It’s not all bad.
Alice Willis May 1996

I painted a violet today
It isn't just five leaves.
It's a flower and a face.
First paint the top two petals
They're upstarts, curled smartly aside
The next two stick out at the sides
But the last one is a small
bottom leaf, holding the 5 together.
Don't forget that beardy yellow center on each side
My violet has lines on the bottom petal
Just a few,
Sweet violet
How I love you.

Tulips
So brave
Winter winds
Sun again
Spirit of Spring

You popped out of the ground
so fast I hardly
had time to see you grow.
One day you were peeking
through in the next
up you came and all of a
sudden I had a darling prancing bed
of red and yellow tulips.
