After researching court, census, cemetery, newspaper, church, and various other records on the family name, one learns that the largest problem is the variant spellings.

Forms of our family name (which always has two syllables) include the following:

CARNRIKE, CARNRIGHT, CANRIGHT, CARNRICK, CARNRITE, CARNRYCK, CARNRWRIGHT, CANRITE, CANWRIGHT, CONRIGHT, CONRIKE, CONRITE, CONWRIGHT, CORNRIGHT, GARNRECK, GARNRYCK, GANRYCKE, GERNRECK, GERNRRIC, GERNREICH, GERNRYK, KARNRIJK, KARNRYCK, KARNRYK, KARNRYKE, KERNRICH, KERNRIKE, AND KERNRYK.

The forms having two "R's" are the older, and of them, those beginning with "G" are the earliest, those with "K" come next, and those with "C" are the latest.

Ulster County N.Y. State CARNRIKE's who moved west, first to Michigan and later to Minnesota, South Dakota, Washington, California, etc., dropped the first "R" and became "CANRIGHT" or "CONRIGHT."

Those who stayed in central NY State, or moved to western PA and Canada, keep the spelling "CARNRIKE."

Those who stayed in Ulster County NY State and eastern PA spell it either "CARNWRIGHT" or "CARNRIGHT."

Those who went to NY City and the NJ area spell it "CARNRICK."

JOHN PETER GERNREICK's son, Hieronomus, spelled his name CARNRIKE on the 1790 US Federal Census for NY. He and his brother, John as well as other members of the family spelled the name CARNRIKE on the 1810 census.

Dr. Alfred Hans Kuby of Edenkoben, who is so knowledgeable about the genealogy of his region and has been very helpful to all of us interested in immigration to America, advises Hank Jones that the father of John Peter, was NICOLAUS GERNREICH, in 1700 called an imperial solder of the Wurttemberg Regt. zu FuB, from Schluchtern near Heibronn, by profession a tailor; he married ANNA GERNERT from Konigsberg zu Oberhorrt. John Peter was baptized in Edenkoben on January 1700.
