I started learning what its takes to be a breeder, all the time, and energies, of balancing a healthy clean cattery, while still maintaining a home with a family, and my obligations to them. I knew I could be in for some heart-aches along the way, but I also knew that there would be joys too. Knowing all the changes that I would have to adjust to, I still wanted to breed the Birman.
My first litter was born in late summer of 1993, "the Q year". You see Birman breeders here in the United States have a naming tradition with our Birmans. Each year we use the next letter in succession with the Alphabet. In 1993 when I started it was the "Q" year, 1994 was the "R" and so on. This year, 1997, would then be the "U" year. It is not mandatory to go with the tradition, but most breeders do use the Alphabet guide.
