One morning I decided to go on a long journey. One that would take me to fascinating places that my ancestors came from such as Scotland and Ireland on big ships that travelled to the east coast of the United States to places like Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. From these states, they started going west by first horses, wagon trains and eventually locomotives into Tennessee, Alabama, Texas and Arkansas. Unfortunately, they fought in wars with the Native Americans, in the Civil War, World War I, World War II and Viet Nam.
Starting is the hardest part because you are venturing off into other lands and your ancestor's privates lives. I wanted to write down all of my discoveries in a family book that would be handed down from generation to generation and I wanted it to be accurate, so I began gathering authentic records such as: birth, death and marriage certificates, social security records, military records, bible records, family photographs of ancestors and old homesteads, and even old cemeteries.
I even found great places where I could conduct my research in the comfort of my own home at places like The Library of Congress, The Church of Latter Day Saints, Ancestry Home Town, Cyndi's List, and United States History Research, just to name a few. I found many cousins over the Internet. Some had written books on their ancestry that helped to provide even more information such as History of the Carlock Family written by Marion Pomeroy Carlock, published in 1929, Robert Hardin and Decendants, published in 1996 that lists many DUNCANS mostly from the Arkansas area.
I will constantly be updating the information on this webpage so be sure to come back often. If you have a DUNCAN web page and would like to make a link, please e-mail me with your informaton and I will add you.
I am also the list owner of the DUNCAN mail list through Rootsweb. We have over 400 Duncan researchers on this list. If you would like to join, it's very simple: Send an e-mail to: duncan-l@request@rootsweb.com (that is an "ell" - not a "one") with the word subscribe in the BODY of the message and nothing in the subject line.
