ORIGIN OF THE RAYMOND/RAYMENT NAME

The family name is French in origin. The original French spelling of Rayment is spelled Raymond. This is probably why some early family members changed the French spelling of Rayment, to the English spelling of Raymond. Upon occasion, some family members retained the French Rayment spelling, and yet can be proven to be directly related to family members who used the Raymond spelling. Record keepers made errors when recording legal documents. Because pronunciations were different and people could neither read or write, the record keepers recorded names as they sounded rather than using a common accepted standard spelling. Other variations have appeared because of this, such as: Raimond, Raiment, and Raymont. For the sake of simplification and clarity I will use Raymond, or Rayment as used by family members.

Now, without further ado, I will proceed with my tree. June Raymond Gorman wrote the Raymond/Rayment family history which has my line back to Richard, the first American. The whole tree is too large to be shown completely, so if you have questions, e-mail me at the address below:

GENERATION 1 The original immigrant and first generation American was Richard Raymond. It is believed that Richard came from County Essex on the coast of England. When the family emmigrated from France to England is yet unknown. Richard came to America as a freeman and landed in Salem, Mass. on May 14, 1634. He was a Mariner by trade and was married to Judith, whose maiden name is yet unknown. They were members of The First Church of Salem before 1636. Richard and Judith had nine children. The descendants of these children are traced in several Raymond publications including The Raymond Family Genealogy; a set of several books, written by Samuel E. Raymond and published in 1969. These books are now out of print, but have been placed in several libraries throughout the country. The books include many stories about the descendants of Richard and Judith. Many of whome were well-known and prosperous. The descendants of their ninth child, Daniel, are traced on this page.
After a rich and full life, Richiard died in Saybrook, Conn before March 12, 1692. Judith also died in 1692 in Saybrook.

GENERATION 3

Daniel Raymond, the ninth child of Richard and Judith Raymond, was baptised in Salem Church, Mass. on Feb 17, 1653. Daniel was married twice; the first time to Elizabeth Harris, the daughter of Gabriel Harris, about 1675.

They had three children:

1. Elizabeth Raymond, baptized Nov 12, 1676
Spouse: David Richards, married in 1698
2. Sarah Raymond, baptised Jan 29, 1679
Spouse: Benjamin Armstrong, married in 1702.
3. Richard Raymond, baptised Aug 7, 1681
Died in infancy.

Elizabeth Harris Raymond died on Aug 10, 1683. Daniel was remarried on April 15, 1684 to Rebecca Lay. Rebecca was the daughter of John Lay.

Daniel and Rebecca had three children:

4. Richard Raymond, born Jan 9, 1686
Died in Norwich, Conn Feb 23, 1752
5. Samuel Raymond was born between
1686-1691 at Lyme, New London County
Connecticut.
6. John Raymond, born Dec 19, 1691.
Died before May 4, 1711. (He is not listed
in Daniel's will.

Daniel died in 1696 at Saybrook, Conn. Rebecca married Samuel Gager of Norwich. The family then went to live in Norwich, where Samuel Gager resided.

GENERATION 4
The Children of Samuel Raymond:

Samuel Raymond was born sometime between 1686 and 1691. He was the second child of Rebecca Lay (Sage) and the fifth child of Daniel Raymond. He was born in Lyme, Connecticut. Samuel married Lydia Burchard of Lebanon, Conn. on March 6, 1716. Lydia was the daughter of John Burchard and his second wife, Jane (Lee) Hyde.

Samuel and Lydia had two children:

1. Daniel Raymond was born about 1717
in Norwich, Connecticut. 2. Samuel Raymond was born about 1720
Baptised Sept 25, 1720 at Norwich, Conn.
Spouse: Lucinda Story married 1743

Samuel died in 1724 or 1725 in Norwich, Conn. and Lydia Burchard Raymond died after May 17, 1744.

GENERATION 5
The Children of Daniel Raymond:

Daniel was born March 28, 1717 and was baptised on Sept 25, 1720 at Norwich, Conn. Daniel was very young when his father died on June 4, 1733. He appeared in court on June 4, 1733 as a minor, to choose Francis Smith as his guardian. He appeared again on May 29, 1735 to again choose a guardian: this time it was Jacob Hite.
There is a theory that Daniel was first married to the sister of Timothy Hurd with whom he had many land dealings. Another marriage, maybe his second, was to Elizabeth Blackmer Doty. Elizabeth was first married to Isaac Doty, who died in 1740. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Blackmer and Mary Brickett. Daniel and Elizabeth were married on March 21, 1741 at Wareham, Mass.
Daniel had two children, but their mother is still uncertain. She probably was Elizabeth Blackmer, because of the dates that can be documented.
1. Daniel Raymond, b about 1714 in Woodbury, Conn.
Spouse: Rebecca Crosby m in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
Lived and died in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
Died in 1795 at the age of forty-eight.
2. Timothy Raymond, born 1748 in Woodbury, Conn.

Daniel died in Woodbury, Conn. on Nov 29, 1749.
(It should be noted that another Daniel Raymond was born about 1747 and lived in Woodbury, but he was not of this Raymond line).

GENERATION 6
The children of Timothy Raymond:

Timothy was the fifth generation American. He was born about 1748 in Woodbury, Litchfield Co, Conn. Since Timothy's father, Daniel, died at a relatively early age, his uncle, Samuel, became the guardian of Timothy and his brother, Daniel. He brought the two sons from Woodbury, to his home in Norwich, Conn, where Timothy spent much of his life.
Little is known about Timothy, but it is certain that he served in The Revolutionary War.
Timothy was married to Mary, whose maiden name is yet unknown. Only one child has been identified through records to date:

1. Roswell Raymond was born March 8, 1769
in Norwich, New London Co, Conn.

Roswell was born when Timothy was about twenty years old and it is quite possible that there were other children.
When Roswell was about eight years old, Timothy went to fight in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted under Brigadier General Jebidiah Huntington at Norwich, Conn. Family lore states that Timothy drove an oxen team for General George Washington and Lafayette's army. This has not been documented, but it is possible, since Layfayette's army maneuvered throughout this area.
It is uncertain when Timothy died or was buried. The only known Timothy Raymond grave to date is in Killingly, Windham Co, Conn. (north of Norwich).
