323. CHAUNCEY D. FRANCISCO was the son of John R. Francisco and Julia Potter. He was born about 1851 in the Town of Middlesex, Yates Co., NY and died 22 June 1888, Town of Middlesex, Yates Co., NY. Chauncey married HELEN MAY THOMAS about 1868 in the Town of Middlesex, Yates County, NY. Helen was the daughter of LOREN THOMAS and EMILY POTTER.

Notes for Chauncey D. Francisco:

1880 Federal Census for Town of Middlesex, Yates Co, NY, page 20, District 10, Enumeration District 29, 17 June 1880, family #135 (next door to his brother, Levi, and his wife, daughter and a related "servant" and Chauncey's mother Julia and her 11 year old son, Franklin:

(CLN) 2/4/99 - Received requested document from the Yates County Historian. "Register of deaths in the Village of Penn Yan, Yates Co., NY, Register #502, date of death, 22 June 1888."
Name of deceased: Chauncey D. Francisco; age 39; marital status, married; occupation, laborer; birthplace, Middlesex; mother's name, Julia Patten (historian wrote "sic, her mother's name was Potter), birth place, Allegany Co., NY; place of death, Penn Yan; cuase of death, "Hemmorage from artery (suicide)", meddical attendant, B L Holt; place of burial, Middlesex. (Note: age 39 is probably inaccurate, based on earlier census information. He was 29 on June 17, 1880, so would be 37 on June 22, 1888.) (CLN)

From Jeffrey Francisco, my uncle, and great grandson of Chauncey: "Chauncey committed suicide by stepping in front of a moving train".

Notes for Helen Thomas Francisco:

Helen married William H. Miller after the death of Chauncey. It took a while for us to find her maiden name. Below is the information Chuck uncovered about Helen:

1900 Federal Population Census, Missaukee County, MI, (Supervisory District 11, Enumeration Dist #115, Forest Township, Lawrence C. Lake, Enumerator). Dwelling 18, Family 18, 4 June 1900. (M460, BHC 1019, Reel 154):
MILLER, WM H., head, w, m, b. March 1844, age 56, marr 11 years, born MI, father born NY, mother born York...? (Could not decipher; started, rather than ended with "York".); HELEN M, wife, w, f, b. Jan 1849, 51, marr 11 years, born NY, father/mother born NY, gave birth to four children, three living (Pearl died in 1897 and is buried in the cemetery in West Branch Twp, Missaukee County). Both William and Helen read and write and speak English. They own a house and have a mortgage.

Did a complete record search of Missaukee County deaths and was unable to find Helen M. Miller or Helen M. Francisco. The county clerk made the same search two weeks before with the same result. (4/12/1999). Also checked for death record of her dying in Charlevoix County.

After learning Helen's family name, checked the census indexes on line and ordered census materials (CLN):

1850 Federal Census, Town of Jerusalem, Yates Co, NY; 29 Sept 1850, dwelling 205, family 208; LOREN THOMAS, 28, m, farmer, realty valued at $400, born NY; EMMA THOMAS, 23, f, b. NY; JOSHUA S, 5, m, b. NY; SARAH, 4, f, b. NY; EDWIN, 2, m, b. NY; HELLEN (sp.), 6/12, f, b. NY. (Note: other information indicated Helen born Jan, 1849: this would mean she was over 1 and 1/12 years of age. Based on other entries, the "6/12" is probably an error.)

1855 State Census, Yates Co., NY: Did not request the correct census page. Rechecked index. Helen is with another Thomas family in the Town of Potter. Her father, mother, and most siblings are also in Potter in a separate household. Need to request these new pages from historian.

1860 Federal Census, Yates Co., NY, Town of Potter, residence 21, family 21, 15 June 1860. Family Thomas in Potter again without Helen: LOREN T. THOMAS, 39, m, carpenter, personal estates worth $100, b. NY; EMILY THOMAS, 35, f, b. NY (all children also born in NY); SARAH J, 14, f; EDWIN H, 13, m; ALICE H, 1, f; JOHN F(LAG), 8, m; HANNA E, 6, f; EMILY S, 5, f; CHARLES F, 3, m.

1860 Federal Census, Yates, Town of Potter, 9 July 1860, dwelling #164, family #156: STEVEN M PARSONS, 42, m, farmer; value of real estate, $7,475; value of personal estate $1845; b. NY (as were all other family members). GERNSHA PARSONS, 43, f; GEORGE H PARSONS, 18, m, farming; JAMES W PARSONS, 14, m; CHARLES M PARSONS, 11, m; HELEN THOMAS, 11, f; HARRIET PARSONS, 26, f, servant. (The Parsons were clearly a family of means relative to almost everyone, but especially to the Thomas family. They appear to have taken Helen Thomas in for whatever reason(s).)

1865 State Census, Town of Jerusalem, Yates County, NY, 22 July 1865, dwelling @216, a frame house, worth $75.00, family #226: LOREN THOMAS, 45, m, b. Cayuga Co, marr'd once, curr marr'd, farmer; EMILY THOMAS, 40, f, wife, b. Yates (as were all children), parent of 10 children, marr'd once, currently marr'd; EDWIN THOMAS, 18, m, son, laborer; HELLEN (sic) THOMAS, 15, f, dau; FLAG (probably John F) THOMAS, 13, m, son; ELISHA (Lizzie or Elizabeth) THOMAS, 11, f, dau; EMMA THOMAS, 10, f, dau; FRANKLIN THOMAS, 8, son; ALLICI THOMAS, 6, f, dau; JAMES THOMAS, 3, m, son.

The Thomas family in 1865 had eight children living at home, the oldest being Edwin. In the 1850 census, the two oldest children, Joshua and Sarah lived with them. This accounts for the ten children reported by the mother. Emily in this enumeration. Note also, both Loren's and Edwin's names have stars by them in the census index, which is indicative of the participation in the CIVIL WAR. Further research needed on this issue.

4/23/99: Found a Surrogate Court Petition by Loren Thomas, dated 1875 at locator 371. It appears to be a will, and names the following individuals: Emily, John F(lag), Charles F, Alice E, James E, Edward H, and Sarah J. Thomas; Emma S. Watkins; Helen M and Lizzie Francisco (Chauncey and Levi's wives). (CLN, 5/20/99): While browsing the internet, found at Missaukee County genealogy website the Federal Census Index for 1910. It contained "Helen Miller" living in Forest Township. Had missed her before when I checked 1910 some time back. Interestingly, William is not with her; moreover, she herself died in 1910, later, in October. Need to check this item next time I get to the genealogy library.

Trip to Detroit Public Library, Burton Collection, on June 1, 1999: Found on Burton 224, Reel 665, 1910 Federal Census, Missaukee, Forest, 15 April 1910, Clare Edmonds, enumerator, Supv Distr 11, Enum Distr 136, Sheet 1A, dwelling 3, fam 4:

From a history of Missaukee County prepared in the 1960's (obtained from the Chamber of Commerce) comes this account of James Francisco:

..."On October 6, 1943, James Francisco stated that he was 70 years old in April. He is a brother of William and Pearl Francisco. James married Stella Charon. In May of the year he was 14, he was driving a team for Hughie McMullen of the logging firm of Stone and McMullen. He hauled water in barrels from Willow Run, meeting and discharging the water into tanks of three locomotives which were being hauled by teams and their own power to be placed on rails laid along the north edge of section 9 to the northwest corner of section 10 of the west part of Norwich Township."
..."The moving of these locomotives was attested to by Lafe Rayment (who by coincidence is an uncle of my paternal grandmother, Edna (Rayment) Harris). Manley Steward worked the end of the West Branch and Moorestown Railroad, which had been acquired by Stone and McMullen one or two years prior to 1887. It was used to haul logs to the west branch of the Muskegon River."
..."Stone and McMullen began lumbering in 1867 and hauled the logs to "the Dump" on the main Muskegon River, a few miles below Houghton Lake. It was necessary to narrow the gauge an inch or tow to fit the rails on the tracks at Blodgett and Byrne over which road they made part of the trip. The engines were side geared and referred to as "crabs". This was attested to by Axel Johnson."
..."Billie Cantwell of Moorestown stated in July, 1943, that he had seen William Sutherland hewing out the skids on which the engines were moved. This was on the land which now belongs to Fred Wilson."
..."This was taken from an account by Fred Hirzel." (Lake City/Missaukee County Historical Society).
